The Original Muscle Car

It's hard to imagine that the Pontiac GTO might never have made it into production. Had it not been for a small group of managers at Pontiac who were also car enthusiasts and visionaries, the GTO might not have been.

Classic Car Overview

This snazzy GTO has undergone a 2011 paint and bodywork redux and came to our consignor as partial payment for the restoration of another vehicle. It has the original engine and a Muncie transmission and the build sheet included. A new top, the addition of Vintage Air air conditioning and a clean black interior, this car is in excellent condition overall. Exterior This writers favorite version of the venerable GTO, the Pontiac division got it all right this year. Stacked dual headlights framed with pristine mirror-like bezels flank the iconic split grille with signal lights and GTO badging, and a lower bumper with nary a mark or dimple on it. Looking down the line towards the rear we can see only straight steel, well minded gaps, and miles of Burgundy paint covering broken up by a lower stainless rocker cover again with the GTO badge up front next to the wheel well. A long straight scooped hood backs up to clean glass all around all framed by shiny polished trim. Moving to the back a long laser straight trunk lid curves downward to the foursome of horizontal thin rear tail light clusters, and more gorgeous framing of chromed trim and a snappy rear bumper. Lest we forget, a canvas convertible top in black covers the passengers and presents with a crystal clear plastic rear window. Some flaws are noted in the finish with a few areas of sanding marks, inclusions and a notable lifting of the paint on top of the drivers fender. 14-inch Pontiac Rally 1 wheels are all around and sport red stripe radial tires for that period correct look. Interior You can take this interior to the bank in black...the vinyl is just beautifully preserved and pristine. Door panels, front buckets and rear bench are like new. A wood applique topper covers the center console which races through the front buckets making room for a Hurst manual shifter and goes forward hiding under the original dash and displaying a factory Pontiac manifold vacuum gauge. More perfect wood appliqu for the gauge cluster, and center panel which houses the airflow levers and the factory installed AM/FM radio. The factory black plastic steering wheel fronts the appliqu and down low on the dash we note the addition of venting for the added on Vintage Air system. Black carpet floods the floors along with rubber Pontiac embossed mats, a crack free padded dash top in black gives a beautiful view out the windshield. Drivetrain Under the hood is a snazzy correct 400ci mill, metallic light blue painted block and intake with chromed valve covers, and air cleaner housing. Hoses are all supple and shiny, and no corrosion on any parts is seen. A single 4-barrel carburetor and a circa 1968 Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission with a 10-bolt rear axle with 3.70 gearing make this runner have the ability to get down the road in two shakes of a lambs tail. Undercarriage Very clean rust-free frame and floor pans are noted underneath. The 2-1/2-inch stainless steel exhaust runs from stern to bow and is in excellent condition. 4-wheel drum brakes are seen as well as independent coil springs up front, and 4 link with coil springs on the rear for the suspension. Drive-Ability Our muscle car aficionado took the wheel and gave a 3 thumbs up to this car as to its drive-ability. It lit right up, idled smoothly, and took off like a bolt of lightning. He reported it handled well, came to a quick stop, and was comfortable to drive. This goat will butt in at any chance it gets. This goat has had a good life, spending its time garaged, and used but then put away nicely. Good exterior paint retaining its shine, a super engine, well done with a 4-barrel carb, and a 4-speed drivetrain, we now have a whole different animal in our Hallowed Halls of Classic Auto Mall. 242677B134842 2-Pontiac 42-GTO 67-Convertible 7-1967 B-Baltimore, MD Assy Plant 134842-Sequential Unit Number TRIM TAG 06B-2nd Week June Build ST 67 24267-1967 GTO Convertible BDY BAL3339-Baltimore Body # TR 223-Black Vinyl Buckets PNT N1-Burgundy, White Top
