1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am: The Star of "Smokey and the Bandit"

Burt Reynolds may have been the star, but it was the black 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am that stole the show. There's nothing like seeing that Starlight Black Pontiac Firebird Trans Am emerge from the back of the Bandit's truck.

Windy City Warriors

From around 1956 until the mid 1980s, Dodge, Plymouth and even Chrysler squads were the most ubiquitous police cars in North America. In fact, the biggest department, the NYPD, used Plymouth and Dodge squads almost exclusively until the rear-drive M body car was finally axed in 1989.

Classic Car Overview

This clean 1967 Pontiac Firebird convertible looks subtle but packs a 350 cubic inch punch under its pointed hood. Even better, theres a lot of recent work, turning this lovely convertible into a great cruiser that has a real muscle car look. Add in a handsome interior and a top that goes down, and you have a great choice for warm weather fun. Thats pretty close to factory code Y Mayfair Maize on the body, surely the same stuff they were putting on Corvettes and calling Sunfire Yellow, and it looks just as good here. It isnt this cars original color, but it obviously looks right. The paint was done not too long ago to a very good standard, giving the car a clean, crisp look that definitely has an appeal. Straight bodywork underneath surely helps, and the crease that runs from nose to tail is crisply defined and the gills in the quarter panels are a cool contrast that helps break up the otherwise smooth body. Gaps are good, which can be a challenge on a ragtop, and its thankfully devoid of stripes or add-ons that would spoil the effect. Instead, this car isnt trying too hard and simply lets the hardware to the talking. Theres nice chrome, too, including the pointed front bumper/grille assembly and the Firebird emblems are crisply rendered. Sure, theres plenty of F-body DNA there, but the Firebird has a very distinct flavor thats different from the Camaro. The black bucket seat interior is also nicely restored with reproduction seat covers front and rear, newer black carpets, and a no-nonsense look. The steering wheel is a little thicker and a little smaller in diameter than the original and its parked on top of a tilt column that actually makes a big difference in comfort. Factory gauges are in good condition with a 120 MPH speedometer as standard equipment, and that hood-mounted tach is about the coolest factory gauge ever. A factory AM radio is still in the center of the stack, but its disconnected in favor of a modern AM/FM/CD stereo head unit thats stashed out of sight, a nice decision that preserves the original look. The black convertible top is power actuated and the trunk is finished with a reproduction mat that fits well. A 350 cubic inch V8 makes this lightweight F-body feel insanely fast on the street. Even though its the same size as a Chevy small block, its unique and has its own personality. Dressed with Edelbrock chrome dress-up and a 4-barrel carburetor, its got instantaneous throttle response and a later HEI distributor lights it up with ease. Its beautifully detailed with Pontiac Turquoise paint on the block and the satin black engine bay makes a perfect backdrop. A big radiator doesnt seem to mind the engines heat and its got power front discs with a new master cylinder and distribution block, and power steering makes it easy to drive. A TH350 3-speed automatic makes for an easygoing personality in this convertible and it spins a 10-bolt rear end with reasonable gears that definitely help. Custom black powdercoated wheels look awesome against the black paint and carry 215/65/15 front and 245/60/15 rear performance radials. Lots of fun to drive with a look that speaks softly yet carries a big stick, this Firebird more than delivers on the promises made by its look. Call today!
