Classic Car Overview

This is an absolute gem of an opportunity. I have owned and cared meticulously for this vehicle for the last 32 YEARS and I'm finally deciding to let someone else enjoy it. Firstly, it is a strong runner and driver - runs and sounds excellent and has never ever been in an accident!!! I purchased this vehicle in 1992 and I believe I am only the third owner. It was originally sold in Los Angeles (Baldwin Park) back in 1967 and then sold to the uncle of a friend of mine back in 1991 and then I bought it from him sometime in the summer of 1992.

The story behind it. Firstly, this isn't a common Belvedere II. This is the far less common post car Belvedere I which has a much stronger body due to the post between the rear and front windows. According to classic car industries, in 1967 there were 115,702 Belvederes produced but the majority of them were the Belvedere II and my research shows that 88,347 of them were the II model. The difference in those production numbers was the Belvedere I and according to my math, that makes it 27,355 of the Belvedere I produced. This is a much more rare vehicle than the II.

As for how this vehicle made it's way through life. This has always been a California car and at least as long as it has been in my posession it has never left California or been in the snow. I've always kept it in a garage or if it has been outside for short periods of time, I used a quality car cover to preserve it. It left the factory with an exterior paint color of white with a modest straight 6 motor. The uncle I wrote about earlier did a drivetrain swap with a 1971 Dodge Charger including the bolt on swap out of the K member to upgrade it to the 440 7.2 liter big block and 727 torqueflite transmission that it has in it today. He also swapped out the rear axle with a Ford axle and pumpkin that I believe has 311 gears. When I bought it, he had done an excellent and thorough job but both the engine and transmission were severely tired. I took the time to pull them both back out and rebuild them (I have all the receipts). The rebuild of the motor also took a 40 over bore which converted it to a 447ci engine. From the receipt that the machine shop gave me, that rebuild took place on June 23, 1994. I believe I only have roughly 40,000 miles on that engine since the rebuild but it's difficult to be sure because the gearing in the rear end doesn't match with the gearing in the speedometer so it always has read faster than the actual speed.

Here is a list of other upgrades I did to it to make it more of a solid resto-mod:

1) Engine and transmission rebuilds
2) Reupholstered all seats in 1993
3) Painted the exterior black in 1993
4) Refurbished brakes (4 wheel new drums, shoes, cylinders, hardware) in 2015. Brakes are solid!!
5) Performer series Edelbrock carburetor
6) All new front end suspension bushings, idler arm etc done in 1998
7) Edelbrock Torquer II intake manifold, professionally polished
8) Exhaust manifolds were replaced with pipe headers in 2013. I have the original cast iron manifods on hand and they have no cracks.
9) New exhaust piping and mufflers were done sometime in 2011 I believe
10) Recently upgraded cooling system to an aluminum race radiator, I have the original radiator if you'd like to have it.
11) Added modern car electric fans and cooling sensor for kick on. This car does not overheat!
12) Upgraded the engine with electronic iginition to replace points
13) Engine was removed again in 2015 and all freeze plugs were replaced with brass
14) Cragar wheels, passenger side with reverse thread wheel studs were replaced with standard thread
15) Mechanical fuel pump replaced November of 2024
16) Edelbrock cast aluminum valve covers
17) Typical maintenance items, spark plugs, plug wires, oil changes, battery/alternator/belt replacements
18) Fuel tank was replaced with a brand new one in 2014, grommet replaced again in 2018
19) Front bumper removed, rechromed and replaced
20) Ignition switch replaced
21) Carpet replaced in 2016
22) Headliner!!! The headliner was replaced in 2018 and it's absolutely perfect

Some further highlights:

1) Has original AM radio, dash has not been butchered
2) Very very very little rust
3) All glass is solid and windows function
4) All trim is in great shape
5) All original metal from the factory
7) Heater works excellent
8) Vent knobs work great
9) Cigarette lighter works for charging phones etc
10) locks, trunk latch, hood latch etc all work well
11) Sometime in the '70s it was issued six character California blue plates. I restored them and painted them to transform them to California black plates
12) Again, I've saved or have parts, I have:
- the original wheels with the dog dish caps and lug nuts
- extra reverse thread brake drum with plenty of wall material remaining
- defrost heater hose
- original radiator
- new in the box valley pan
- new glove compartment
- original (to the engine) intake manifold
- original (to the engine) exhaust manifolds
- extra carburetor
- original (to the engine) distributor
- original (to the car) owners manual
- various odds and ends that I've saved through the 32 years
- extra headlight bezels and grill
- $200 high quality outdoor custom fit car cover
- indoor car cover

Some items it could use if you'd like to tinker:

1) Turn signal switch is now saggy. I guess the car keeps asking me to turn left ;)
2) Windshield wipers don't function, I haven't driven it in the rain in maybe 2 decades
3) Glove compartment could use replacing, I have a new one ready to go
4) Heater defroster hose needs replacing, heater works but the defrost hose has been removed. I have it.
5) Tires have tons of tread but a little kind of on the old side. I believe 12 years or so.
6) Steering alignment
7) dash pad has some cracks
8) Antenna could use replacing. I have it off because a car cover would get torn with it on

Lastly, being a California car, it has extremely little rust. I believe there was some under the carpet on the passenger rear side that I did a small rivet sheet metal patch job on back in 1992 and coated with a rust killer. There was also a small amount of rust in the trunk that I coated with a rust killer but other than that, it is all original steel and a survivor at that. Frame and under carriage have no rust.

It's been a struggle for me emotionally to ever let it go but at this period of time in my life, I think it's time to let someone else enjoy it and carry on it's legacy! :) I have waaaay too many projects and I just don't get the time to drive it nearly often enough. Typicaly when I drive it, i just drive it to give it it's exercise and that's the most that happens. This vehicle is an absolute head turner and when I do drive it and stop somewhere, I always get compliments which is nice. Thanks for reading and I wish you best of luck with your car hunting - I can tell ya this one is a rare gem.
