VW Kombi Van Seeing Resurgence in Popularity

The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. From a cargo carrier with no windows behind the driver's seat to a windowed passenger van with three rows of seats, the possibilities seemed endless.

Classic Car Overview

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sothebys Miami event, 27 February 2026.
Offered Without Reserve $50,000 - $70,000 USD

  • A splendid example of mid-century automotive glamour
  • Comprehensive, ground-up restoration completed in 2015 by Riga Master Workshop in Latvia
  • Showstopping in Light Red (DB-519) over beige leather upholstery
  • 2.5-liter inline six-cylinder engine with fuel injection and a four-speed manual gearbox
  • A US-market example factory equipped with power steering, heat-insulated glass, drivers side exterior mirror, Becker Europa radio, and whitewall tires
  • Accompanied by a data card copy and restoration documents

For enthusiasts of Paul Bracqs iconic mid-century Mercedes-Benz designs, the 250 SE strikes a graceful balance combining the refined elegance of the earlier models with the emerging power and presence that would culminate in the 280 SE and its mighty 3.5-liter V-8. Introduced in 1965, the 250 SE represented a thoughtful evolution rather than a revolution. The familiar, hand-built coupe and cabriolet forms remained, but beneath the bonnet lay a specially designed 2.5-liter fuel-injected straight-six engine which delivered broader, more effortless acceleration for sustained high-speed touring.

As recorded on a copy of its data card build record, this 250 SE Coupe left the factory finished in Light Red (DB-519) with black leather upholstery. Destined for the US market, it was equipped with a four-speed manual gearbox, bucket seats with front seatbelts, a drivers side exterior mirror, a Becker Europa radio, heat-insulated glass, and whitewall tires.

Beginning in 2013, the car underwent a comprehensive, ground-up restoration by Riga Master Workshop in Latvia. Scores of accompanying photographs document its careful disassembly to the bare metal chassis, followed by detailed metalwork and a refinish in its factory-correct Hellrot, or Light Red (DB-519). The restoration continued with a complete overhaul of all mechanical and electrical systems, including rebuilding the engine, transmission, rear axle, suspension, and brakes. Further work included new wiring, replated brightwork, a period-correct upgraded air conditioning system, and all-new beige leather upholstery by Leder-Reinhardt. The car is also equipped with a modern Blaupunkt AM/FM CD stereo, with a correct-type Becker Europa unit included with the sale.

Wearing a truly comprehensive restoration, this 250 SE Coupe is a shining example of mid-century motoring powerful enough to be genuinely capable, rare enough to feel special, and visually purer than many of its contemporaries.
