Initially only offered as a four-door saloon, Lancias Flavia soon blossomed into a variety of body styles, including a two-door coupe, and a two-door convertible. Just 1,601 convertibles were built with bodies built by Vignale. At first, these cars were offered with a 1,500 cc engine, but later examples, like the car offered here, were fitted with a 1.8-litre inline-four cylinder with twin carburetors.
The Flavia offered here is a very intriguing example, being one of roughly forty Flavia convertibles built to right hand drive specification. Destined for the U.K., it is believed that the car was shipped there in 1964, but it was first registered three years later in March of 1967. Its first owner was a Gerald Malin who retained the car through December of 1988. At that time, the car was purchased by Rory Knight Bruce and was noted has having driven only 13,000 miles during Mr. Malins ownership.
Mr. Bruce proved to be a passionate owner and kept the Flavia for ten years, during which time significant work was carried out and articles were written on the car that appeared in both The Sunday Telegraph and Classic Cars magazine. The car was then sold to Shaun Sheppard who restored the car at a cost of over 21,000 from 1999-2000, at which point the cars odometer read 31,000 miles. During his ownership following the restoration, the car was regularly maintained by Tanc Barratt and the Lancia specialists Omicron Engineering. The car was then purchased by Nikki Fitzgerald in September of 2007. She regularly drove the car during her ownership, insuring that it was regularly serviced as well.
Passing through one more U.K.-based owner from 2014-2016, the car was then acquired by the consignor and subsequently exported to Austria, where it has remained ever since. Prior to departing the U.K., the car received a full service at Thornley Kelham and has been well looked after since. Accompanied by a rare factory hardtop, this is truly a lovely drivers example. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/0221.
