Classic Car Overview
Founded in Turin by Frank Reisner, Intermeccanica produced automobiles in remarkably small numbers, placing craftsmanship and individuality above mass production. The Italia quickly became the companys signature model, pairing graceful European styling with proven Ford power to create an automobile that delivered exotic looks without the complexity often associated with contemporary Italian sports cars.
Representing the models inaugural production year, this 1967 Italia Spyder comes from an exceptionally limited early production run and is one of only a handful of convertibles produced during that first year. Finished in a deep Italian racing red, reminiscent of Rosso Corsa, and complemented by a black soft top, it captures the unmistakable proportions that made Italian grand touring cars of the era so captivating.
Unlike many later examples, this Italia features a rare all-steel body mounted over a tubular steel chassis, giving it an especially authentic coachbuilt character. Under the hood resides a Ford 351 cubic-inch V8 fitted with an individual throttle body induction system, combining abundant American torque with razor-sharp throttle response and an intoxicating induction note. A 4-speed manual transmission keeps the driving experience engaging and mechanical, while Wilwood brakes provide reassuring stopping performance for modern road use.
The cabin is equally inviting, trimmed in cream upholstery with contrasting black carpeting and accented by Jaeger instrumentation, a Hurst shift knob, and what appears to be the original leather-wrapped steering wheel. Its naturally worn patina speaks to decades of careful enjoyment and gives the interior an authenticity that simply cannot be replicated. Original Magnum 500 wheels wrapped in Michelin Defender tires complete the purposeful stance, while a quad-tip dual exhaust reinforces the unmistakable character of the Ford V8.
Showing just 22,319 miles, this Italia Spyder represents far more than a rare collectible. It is a beautifully executed fusion of two automotive worlds, combining the romance of Italian coachbuilt design with the confidence and reliability of American V8 performance. For collectors seeking something beyond the expected Ferrari, Jaguar, or Corvette, few automobiles offer the exclusivity, conversation-starting presence, and driving character of an early Intermeccanica Italia Spyder.
