1988-1992 Chevrolet Camaro 1LE: The Original Factory Racer

With all the hoopla surrounding the new Camaro 1LE, let's look back at the original.

Classic Car Overview

Bought this car November 2020 after it had just undergone a 4 year full rotisserie restoration from the ground up. It is in mint condition all around and has been nothing but a joy to drive around town, through canyons and up PCH. Haven't done anything to it except keep it in its pristine condition by storing in the garage and put a total of 3000 miles on during those 3 years. Here's what the previous owner had to say about it in 2020 when we purchased it, because I couldn't say it better myself if I tried:

1967 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS: 427 C.I. with 400+ lb/ft of torque and 400+ hp. You'll really feel it pull on the low end in 2nd and 3rd gear as these big block engines have globs or torque at the bottom end and make them extremely fun around town. Engine is definitely a strongpoint on this car as it sounds throaty, healthy but not overly loud. It was born as a 67 RS, SB, 4sp, factory console w/gauges, black interior. I purchased the car from a collector in Brevard County Fl. 5 +years ago. The Camaro was painted Nantucket Blue and had a 427 engine. I loved the fact that it had a date coded 69 Corvette engine, 427, 390HP, oval port heads, 2 bolt mains with a aluminum intake and holley 750 cfm 4 barrel carb. I put it on a trailer and brought it home. When I drove it around the block I discovered the heater core was leaking. I removed the pass. front fender and that's when the 4 yr. rotisserie, nut and bolt restoration began. The Camaro was put together like GM would have built it back in the day with the SS flavor, adding new suspension, Vintage A/C, Tremec TKO 5 speed trans. p/fdb and p/s. The rear suspension is a Calvert Caltrac split leaf system. The rear differential is a 12 bolt w/4:10 gears. The flywheel (1/2 the weight of the stock flywheel), clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing are all Mcleod.

The sheet metal work was done at a classic car restorer in Rochester, NY. All new sheet metal, full quarters, full floor pan, full trunk pan, inner and outer rear wheel housings. All work was done as the factory would have built it. Anything that had a hint of rust was replaced. The car was then shipped back to S. Fl where it was sent to a classic car body shop in Pompano Beach, Fl. The body work was done perfectly. We also added a black vinyl roof. It was prepped and painted 2015 GM Silver Ice.... Gorgeous!!

The interior has no visual modifications. Factory A/C vents, console w/gauges, Retro-sound radio w/dual cone front dash speaker that resembles factory, new seat vinyl, new headliner, new factory carpet. Before the seats were sent out for new vinyl, the seat frames were cleaned and painted. All metal surfaces in the interior are covered with peel and stick insulation including roof, inside the doors and inside rear roll down window cavity. The windshield was replaced and the rest of the windows are original date coded glass.

The suspension has QA1 tubular control arms, 1 1/8" front sway bar, GM disc brake calipers, quick ratio GM steering box, Ididit tilt steering column. The rear has brake drums as the factory would have done it. All brakes and shocks are new. The rear suspension was mentioned in the first paragraph description. Wheels are 17" American Racing Torque Thrust II. The exhaust system is the factory style pipes 2 1/2" with transverse muffler and down turns behind rear tire.

The engine block casting number is 3855961. The pad on the pass front is MH 5 87. Heads are stock, intake is aluminum Edelbrock, Holley carb is a new Classic 750 CFM dual feed double pumper w/manual secondaries and electric choke. All fuel lines, brake lines, wire harnesses are factory style purchased from the after market. The engine camshaft was replaced with comp cam. The engine sounds excellent and is strong. The ignition is electronic with a street fire MSD box and a stock looking distributor. Radiator is a 4 core, 6 blade Clutch fan, T-stat is 180*.

Everything works, back up lights, neutral safety start, parking brake, hideaway headlight covers, etc. This was a meticulous build with the focus being to keep it as close to factory as possible.
