VW Kombi Van Seeing Resurgence in Popularity

The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. From a cargo carrier with no windows behind the driver's seat to a windowed passenger van with three rows of seats, the possibilities seemed endless.

Classic Car Overview

1966/1977 MGB, mileage 52,700, has desirable 4-speed transmission with electric overdrive.

Price reduced: $10,500 > $9,500 > $8,500 > $7,500 > $6,500 (it's gotta go sometime!)

Mix of parts, get the benefit of the 1977 drive train (five main bearing) along with the benefit from lack of smog requirements from a 1966 registration/VIN.

Recent work performed (Frank Monise Motors in Montclair, CA):
Engine rebuilt, all pistons, rings, all bearings and seals replaced, new valve stem oil seals, cam (mild/semi-race) and crank reground, transmission rebuilt and 1st gear synchro replaced (4,000 miles ago)
Suspension fully rebuilt (Malcolm Buckeridge in Montrose did the rebuild on the front shocks), front/rear springs replaced, all new urethane bushings installed (3,500 miles ago)
Brake line hoses, front calipers and rotors replaced, rear drums turned and shoes replaced, master and all slave cylinders replaced (2,250 miles ago)
New 26R battery installed in mid-June 2019 (within last 100 miles)
Gauges all work, though the tach sometimes takes half a block to warm up in cold weather after sitting a long time. Speedo and odometer working though over-indicates speed and under-indicates mileage.

Car had a $12,130.86 restoration completed in 2005 performed at British Sports Cars in San Luis Obispo. At that time following work was performed: body work and new paint, upholstery, speedo/choke cables, rear engine main seal, various seals and cosmetic parts, carpet and panel kits, new grill, 2 brake rotors, axle oil seal, center guide/console, front end parts (fulcrum, spring, lowering kit), clutch assy, belts/hoses/mounts/gaskets, sun visors, washer pump, hood pad, windshield, seat belts, "switch", muffler repair, side molding kit, "conversion" kit (at $750, plus $300 for welding installation), install overdrive, other misc.

Soft top not currently installed (has been removed and wrapped and stored in garage last eight years - hey, it's a SoCal fair weather car!; see photo of car taken 2011 to see condition of top – virtually new condition; included with car).

Fan blades mounted on engine removed and a separate electric fan installed (switched in cockpit for driver’s use).

Car has been lowered, and caution needed when crossing significant bumps as rear suspension can bottom out (jarring surprise for driver if unexpected).

No evidence of any cracks in dashboard. Leather seats in very serviceable condition, but a prior owner’s cat has left claw marks on some areas of the backs (see photos). Carpet and remainder of interior in good condition.

Body condition pretty good/straight (see photos). Rust-free. Paint in generally good condition (has been garaged last eight years), with minor chips and scratches at various locations.

Box of miscellaneous parts and a variety of books on the car included with auction lot. Service records back to 2004 include from two-prior and current owners.

NO WARRANTY – car sold as-is, where-is.

Free local pick-up.
