GR Auto Gallery is pleased to present this 1966 Mercury Comet Cyclone GT for your consideration. This Comet comes in its original Emberglo Metallic color over a Parchment interior. The car was repainted in 1987 in its original Emberglo color and presents as a fantastic example of Mercurys sporty Cyclone GT. Powering this Comet is a period-correct 1968 FE 390 cubic-inch V8, which is not the original engine, fitted with an Edelbrock aluminum manifold and paired with a C6 automatic transmission. The car is equipped with 3.25:1 gears and has been extensively upgraded and maintained over the years. In 2022, it received new upper and lower control arms, tie rod ends, sway bar end links, shocks, Eaton Detroit Spring coil springs, and Eaton Detroit Spring leaf springs. The braking system was upgraded with a new power brake booster, front disc brake conversion, and new dual-circuit master cylinder. The power steering system features a new power steering cylinder and hoses, along with a rebuilt power steering control valve completed in 2024. The car was rust-proofed during its restoration, and the interior has received new front seat covers and seat foam. The gauges were professionally recalibrated and bench tested during the winter of 2025, while a new windshield was also installed. The original steering wheel has been beautifully restored to like-new condition. Other features include a new powered convertible top installed in June 2023, along with much more. The Mercury Comet was introduced for the 1960 model year as Mercurys compact offering, sharing its basic architecture with the Ford Falcon. For 1966, the Comet featured updated styling with a longer, more sculpted appearance, while the Cyclone GT represented the performance-focused version of the lineup. The Cyclone GT could be equipped with Mercurys powerful V8 engines and was marketed as a sporty, stylish alternative in the growing muscle car market. With its distinctive styling, available big-block power, and performance-oriented equipment, the Cyclone GT helped establish Mercury as a significant participant in the classic American performance-car era.
