VEHICLE HISTORY AND STORY

The Shelby Rent-A-Racer program was a legendary partnership between Shelby American and Hertz that began in 1966. This allowed the public the opportunity to rent and experience first hand race-ready GT350H Mustangs at a reasonable rate of $17 per day and $.17 per mile. Originally designed as a promotional tool for the Hertz Sports Car Club, the program became famous among weekend warriors who would rent the cars to compete in drag races or SCCA events. Carol Shelby and (then) Hertz general manager Peyton Cramer struck a deal for 1,000 specially modified GT350s. Depending on the source, some say the number was 999, others state the number was 1001. The majority were finished in Raven Black with Gold Lemans stripes however a very small amount were produced in white, blue, red and green.

This Raven Black 1966 Shelby GT350H, #6S1406 is documented in the Shelby Registry. According to the registry, a radio was installed by Hi-Performance Motors (El Segundo, CA) on 3/27/1966. It was shipped to Eger Motors, Inc. (McKeesport, PA) on 3/24/1966 and arrived on 4/11/1966 for dealer prep prior to delivery to Hertz (Pittsburgh, PA) who was invoiced $3,547 plus $105.55 for chrome Magnum wheels plus $45.45 for the radio plus $20 pre-delivery plus $76.75 freight for a total of $3,794.75. On 4/11/1966 the car arrived with the antenna broken off with 0 miles. The car was then sold to Foss Motors on 8/18/1967. Later purchased by Robert Robben (Arvada, CO) and subsequently purchased by Milford Barber of PA. According to the registry, the present owner/whereabouts are unknown however the car has recently surfaced near Pittsburgh, PA and is now being offered for sale with Carlisle Auctions of Carlisle, PA.

During the cars current ownership, its existence has remained largely private as part of his personal collection for several years. As stated in the Shelby Registry, the current owner and location of the car is unknow. The car has now resurfaced and will be up for auction at the 2026 Spring Collector Car Auction on April 24th in Carlisle, PA. This marks a rare opportunity for you to be the next registered owner of an iconic piece of American Muscle Car History.
