Classic Car Overview

Dodges iconic Charger debuted back in 1966. With its fastback roofline, unique and roomy four-passenger cockpit-style interior, hide-away headlights and powerful lineup of V8 options (including the legendary 426 Hemi) the new Charger was a sensation.

On offer here is nothing less than that top dog -- a 1966 Charger Hemi that has received a gorgeous restoration. And yes, this is a real 426 Hemi car, not a clone, and it must be seen, heard and driven as this thrill ride has all the show and go any muscle car enthusiast could want. This is one of just 468 Hemi Chargers built that year, and one of just 218 equipped with the automatic transmission.

This Chargers handsome body is all original, arrow-straight and rock-solid, as is the underside. The high-quality respray was done in the correct Bright Red and even the factory-correct black pinstripe over the roof was replicated. The various chrome and stainless-steel trim pieces (including the bumpers) were restored as well and have a brilliant shine. The Chargers hidden headlights work as they should and line up perfectly when closed.

Crazy as it sounds, these Hemi cars originally came with 14-inch wheels, so the former owner went with 15-inch wheels but fitted them with the original 14-inch knock-off style wheel covers to keep the Chargers looks all original style. Those wheels wear BF Goodrich Radial T/As that handle and ride much better than the skinny old bias-ply rubber.

Inside, it looks as if youve stepped into the 1966 Charger brochure. The quad bucket seats have been correctly reupholstered and the carpet is new, while the original door panels look fine, as does the crack-free dash. The electroluminescent instruments were restored (known trouble spots in these cars) and all the gauges work great. The simulated wood sport steering wheel adds a nice accent.

Under the hood lies a Barton Racing Engines-built 426 Hemi crate motor that packs considerably more power than even the burly original did. Dyno sheets confirm the staggering output at 620 HP and 630 LB-FT. Apart from the chrome valve covers (we have the original crinkle black units as well as some other parts), the 426 looks mostly factory fresh.

The 727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission was rebuilt and features a manual valve body that bumps up the fun factor. Currently, the car is equipped with a 3.23 Sure Grip rear end, but the original 3.73 unit goes with the car.

Of course, this powertrain will emphatically put you back in the seat when you lean on it, and, thanks to the headers and dual exhaust system with its cross-over pipe and Flowmaster mufflers, sounds awesome in the process. Equally amazing is how docile and easy to drive this powerhouse is when youre just tooling around. Power steering and power front disc brakes (originally had drums up front) add to the ease of wheeling this well-sorted icon around.

Note that the Charger comes with a spare tire, the jack assembly and the owner history and receipts of all the work performed over the past 25 years. With its combination of rarity, condition and massive fun factor, this 1966 Charger Hemi presents an opportunity not to be missed.
