Classic Car Overview
Gateway Classic Cars of Dallas is pleased to present this stunning 1966 BMW 1600-2 European-market example.
This early-production BMW was originally delivered new to Sweden before later relocating to Germany, and it is now offered by the current owner in Texas with a clean Texas title. Finished in the classic shade of Granada Red (023) over a black and gray cloth and Skai vinyl interior, this 1600-2 represents the very beginning of BMWs legendary Neue Klasse lineage.
Power comes from the proven 1.6-liter M10 inline-four, rated at 85 horsepower, paired with a four-speed manual transmission sending power to the rear wheels. The car retains its original 6-volt electrical system, preserving period-correct character and authenticity. Recent mechanical attention includes servicing of the carburetor, transmission, cooling system, and driveline components, ensuring the car runs and drives as intended.
The exterior features early chrome bumpers and bright trim, a driver-side mirror, BMW-branded rear mudflaps, rear reflectors, and classic 13-inch steel wheels with BMW hubcaps wrapped in Continental tires. Front disc brakes provide confident stopping performance, while suspension components have been refreshed for improved ride and handling.
Inside, the cabin showcases front bucket seats and a rear bench trimmed in black vinyl with gray cloth inserts, complemented by salt-and-pepper carpeting. Period-correct features include vented quarter windows, pop-out rear windows, and a Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio, delivering an authentic 1960s BMW driving environment. The dashboard houses a 180-km/h speedometer, analog clock, and auxiliary gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature.
Additional recent service highlights include replacement of the clutch, exhaust system, water pump, thermostat, battery, strut mounts, and various suspension and driveline components. The car comes with an owners manual and service records, reflecting attentive stewardship over the years.
This 1966 BMW 1600-2 is a beautifully presented example of BMWs early sporting sedan heritage-an engaging driver with timeless style and historical significance. Included with the sale is ample documentation of its history.
