From around 1956 until the mid 1980s, Dodge, Plymouth and even Chrysler squads were the most ubiquitous police cars in North America. In fact, the biggest department, the NYPD, used Plymouth and Dodge squads almost exclusively until the rear-drive M body car was finally axed in 1989.
The no-frills Savoy two-door sedan was home to another engine of considerable repute, the infamous 413 Max Wedge, a Super Stock monster block Chrysler introduced in the spring of 1962.
Classic Car Overview
Its well-configured for dependable power and exhilarating driving in real world situations, and in an industry where the quality of the foundation plays a huge part in the finished result, it features the manufacturing handiwork of one of the most respected names in its industry. This 1965 Shelby Cobra Factory Five has logged fewer than 8,000 miles during its lifetime, so its drivetrain is in its prime and youll find plenty of documentation on board to chronicle its journey to road-readiness, along with maintenance records to prove its been well cared for. By virtue of their storied heritage and one of a kind looks, Cobra replicas start life well ahead of the norm in the curb appeal department. They offer a visual experience thats both nostalgia inducing and exotic at the same time - just take a quick glance at this 65 and you cant help but imagine how its low slung form, broad track and outstanding power to weight ratio combine to make it an absolute blast to drive. Clad in a magnetic paint scheme that combines a silver backdrop with a pair of crisp blue painted stripes, this Factory Five representative cuts quite an appearance. Its paint presents well, with a consistently slick texture, and the chrome exterior fittings on display here - from the compact bumpers and light casings in both front and back to the very clean side pipes - are all in great shape, as is the contrasting black roll bar. The black vinyl Interior is a good complement to the outside of this street machine and, having logged so few miles, its reaped the rewards of this cars light usage. As such, you wont find many signs of wear on the surfaces of the low-backed bucket seats, and the black carpet lining the floor and transmission tunnel is about as fresh now as when it was first installed. Climb behind the wheel and buckle up the Simpson racing harness and the urge to do some serious corner carving will overtake you pretty quickly. The sharp woodgrain steering wheel with the signature Factory Five brand at its center looks awfully inviting, while just in front of it, the dash area is well-equipped with a full assortment of AutoMeter gauges - all of which are fully functional. In back, the trunk area is just as solid and well-aligned as youd expect, given its manufacturers reputation for precise workmanship. Beneath the hood youll find a really clean engine bay, at the center of which sits a 302 cubic inch V8, fittingly dressed with an oblong Cobra air cleaner over its 4-barrel Summit polished carb and matching valve covers at its sides and is armed with a pair of Edelbrock aluminum heads and upgraded performance intake manifold to maximize its output. The small block is running great, sending a commanding exhaust note into the headers leading out to its sidepipes as it teams with a 5-speed manual transmission. Coilovers are in place both in front and in back to take full advantage of the Cobras innate agility, making for a ride with world class handling characteristics, while disc brakes at all four corners offer fade resistant stops. This evocative classic is a cinch to turn heads as it cruises on its set of 17 wheels that position 275s in back for excellent asphalt gripping power. In a niche where manufacturer standards are of paramount importance, this 1965 Shelby Cobra Factory Five definitely delivers and its outstanding color combination and clean interior make for a very compelling opportunity.
