Classic Car Overview
1965 Plymouth Fury III Two Door Hardtop | 400 Big Block | Family Owned History
This 1965 Plymouth Fury III has been part of my wifes family for decades, and after 21 years of ownership, I have made the difficult decision to find it a new home.
The car originally came from Idaho, where my wifes family is from. Her father was a mechanic and a lifelong Mopar guy. He owned this Fury himself at one point and built the 400 cubic inch big block engine that is in it today. It still sounds amazing to this day. The car originally had a 383 V8.
The 400 has less than 5,000 miles on it and was built as a strong, reliable street engine. It has Hi Po exhaust manifolds and a small RV cam, giving it a great sound and plenty of character while still making it an extremely enjoyable cruiser.
The Fury later went to one of my wifes six brothers and spent quite a bit of time sitting in his garage. I bought it from him in 2005.
At the time, the car was cream colored. What immediately attracted me to it was the exceptionally straight body and the clean lines of the 1965 Fury. As a designer, I could see what the car could become.
I had it taken apart and refinished in the deep black you see today, added NOS 15 x 7 Magnum 500 wheels, had the chrome polished, and have loved the car ever since. I have included photos showing the Fury when it was still cream colored and during the process of preparing it for the black repaint.
This is a true classic American car, built during an era when American automobiles had a presence and character all their own. The VIN confirms that this Fury III was assembled at Chryslers Hamtramck, Michigan plant.
They dont make cars like this anymore.
For the past 16 years, the Fury has lived with us in Southern California near the coast and has always been garaged. It has not just been something to look at. I have driven it, enjoyed it, and cared for it throughout my ownership. I only put limited miles on it each year, mostly cruising locally, but it has proven to be an incredibly reliable car and is truly the ultimate cruiser.
During my ownership, several upgrades have been made to make the Fury more enjoyable and practical to drive, including a power disc brake conversion, Borgeson power steering box conversion, aluminum radiator, and aluminum coolant overflow tank.
The combination of the deep black exterior, extensive chrome and stainless trim, light and black interior, and NOS Magnum 500 wheels gives the car a strong presence while still allowing the unmistakable lines of the 1965 Fury to be the focus.
I am not representing this as a concours restoration or an all original car. It is a well loved classic with a long family history that has been driven, maintained, garaged, and enjoyed.
There is a small scratch along the passenger door from backing into a tight garage and scraping the side. I believe much of it may be able to be polished or buffed out, but I would rather disclose it and show it honestly than attempt to hide it before selling the car.
The reason for selling has nothing to do with the Fury. My wife and I are now empty nesters and are preparing to rent our Southern California home and spend significant time traveling and living outside the United States. Leaving a car like this sitting for extended periods simply does not make sense.
This one is difficult to let go.
Our daughters grew up riding in this car, and they are not particularly happy that I am selling it. But with the realities of living in Southern California, giving it to one of them and expecting her to have the space to store, maintain, and care for a classic car while we are away is not practical.
I would much rather see the Fury go to someone who will drive it, care for it, and continue enjoying it.
You simply do not see many 1965 Fury IIIs on the road anymore. Everywhere I take it, it gets thumbs up, questions, and compliments. It has that presence that only a big American hardtop from this era has.
I have also included a video of the Fury running and driving so you can hear the 400 big block for yourself and see what the car looks like going down the road. Photos can show you a lot about a classic car, but hearing and seeing this one in motion is really part of its character.
I am hoping to find the next caretaker rather than simply the next owner.
