Determined to challenge the dominance of Modenas finest manufacturers, Ferruccio Lamborghini assembled an extraordinary team of engineers and designers, including Giotto Bizzarrini, Gian Paolo Dallara, and Franco Scaglione. Their efforts culminated in the groundbreaking 350 GTV prototype, featuring advanced engineering for its era, including four-wheel independent suspension and a sophisticated quad-cam V-12 engine inspired by Bizzarrinis racing expertise, the prototype laid the foundation for Lamborghinis future success.
Following further development and elegant coachwork refinements by Touring, the production 350 GT was introduced in 1964. As Lamborghinis first production model, the 350 GT successfully delivered on its ambitious promise, combining impressive performance, refined handling, robust construction, and unmistakably Italian styling. With only approximately 120 examples reportedly produced before the arrival of the 400 GT 2+2, the model remains one of the rarest and most historically significant Lamborghinis.
The alloy-bodied 350 GT on offer, chassis 0262, was delivered new to Geneva in 1965 through Garage Foitek, finished in the elegant shade of Grigio Argento Metallizzato. Its first owner, a Swiss jeweler, retained the car for many years before it passed to another local enthusiast. In 1976, respected historic racing driver and collector Antony MacLean acquired the Lamborghini and imported it to England, where it was registered DPD 6T. The 350 GT subsequently passed through the hands of notable custodians, including Aston Martin Chairman Victor Gauntlett and renowned collectors Simon Draper, Clive Winstone, and Don Davis, with each continuing the cars careful stewardship.
Throughout its life, its knowledgeable and meticulous owners have attended to rigorous maintenance with the car accompanied by extensive documentation including copies of its original build cards (indicating that the car retains its numbers-matching engine) and numerous service records dating back to 1977, when it returned to the factory for a thorough service. Further work over the years has included a bare-metal refinish in its factory-correct Grigio Argento metallic by Moto Technique in 1995, an unleaded-fuel compatible engine rebuild in 2000, the fitment of a stainless-steel exhaust system in 2007, rust-proofing, a suspension rebuild, and the polishing of Borrani wire wheels, among other improvements. More recently, the car has resided for the past 13 years within a prominent South Florida collection, where it has continued to receive attentive care, including a suspension tuning and a complete brake system rebuild by the collections in-house maintenance team in 2021.
Exceptionally documented and lovingly maintained, this 350 GT is an attractive and highly desirable example of the car that launched the legendary Lamborghini marque. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/auctions/mo26/.
