The Ford Thunderbird evolved rapidly following its 1955 introduction. From the initial two-seat boulevardier, it transformed into the four-seat, second-generation car with architectural, squared-off styling, which enthusiasts dubbed the Square Bird retrospectively. The third generation, spanning 1961 to 1963, was all Space Age sleekness, from its pointed nose which earned it the Bullet Bird nickname to the afterburner taillights.
Introduced in 1964, the fourth-generation Thunderbird adopted a lengthened hoodline, a more formal, shortened roofline, and a muscular overall appearance, despite getting a softer suspension. Affectionately called the Flair Bird, it came standard with a 390-cubic-inch 300-horsepower V-8, power steering, and power brakes. This generation remained in production through 1966, incorporating several improvements over its lifespan. Most notably, front disc brakes became standard for 1965 along with distinctive sequential rear turn signals.
