1965 Ford Mustang Convertible

Now here is a classic! This early 1965 Mustang convertible (often referred to as a 1964-1/2 model) is equipped with a 289ci V8 engine and 4-speed manual transmission. It is a beautiful automobile with timeless styling that looks as good today as it did 60 years ago.

This Mustang is the product of an older restoration. Originally Vintage Burgundy, it was completely refinished in Sunlight Yellow along with a black convertible top for a great summertime look. The underside received many of the typical rust repairs found on old Mustangs including floor pans. New weatherstripping was installed throughout and remains in good condition. Badges / trim / bezels / lenses were all reconditioned or replaced as needed, and a new set of GT-style fog lights was installed. The styled steel wheels with trim rings wear new P195/75R14 tires all around. Also note the factory VIN stamp remains clearly visible on the inner fender (which can be important when registering an old Mustang).

This Mustang left the factory with an F-code 260ci 2-barrel engine accompanied by a 3-speed manual transmission. While that is a fine basic V8 drivetrain, it was swapped out in favor of a 289ci 4-barrel setup along with a 4-speed Toploader transmission (both of which were available in early 1965 models). The engine has the proper black finish with a gold air cleaner and valve covers. It retains a generator as well which is correct for the early Mustangs. A Monte Carlo bar was installed for extra rigidity, as the underhood convertible reinforcing bars were not introduced until later in production. Other mechanical details include manual steering and brakes which work perfectly.

The interior is standard black with bucket seats. Everything appears stock throughout with the exception of the digital twin-shaft radio. Desirable equipment includes a center console along with a column mounted Rally-Pac unit. As a 1965, this car has a sweep style speedometer flanked by fuel and temperature gauges. The headlights, fog lights, backup lights, interior lights, and turn signals all work properly. So do the horn, wipers, washers, heater / defroster, e-brake, and radio.

A first-generation Mustang convertible is one of the most iconic cars of the 1960s, and this example is especially desirable being an early 1965 with a nice color combination, 289 engine, and 4-speed transmission. While there are lots of classic cars out there, its hard to beat a ragtop Mustang on a nice summer evening.
