Given that the 21st century has seen a sort of return to the roots aspect for the Mustang, it was probably only a matter of time before the Boss 302 made a return. Over the last few years there's been steady and growing interest in the concept of a new-age Trans Am Special.
Jim Clarke led the charge with the creation of the 5.0 HO V8 for the Mustang in 1982 and was responsible for the continuous improvement of the 5.0 throughout the '80s. What Jim and his team accomplished is truly amazing.
Classic Car Overview
The Beatles, The Stones, The Dave Clark Five, and the new Ford Mustang were some of the hottest popular culture happenings in the mid sixties. The Mustang is right up near the top, as in this body style alone - the 2-door hardtop - more than 422,000 cars were produced for the 1965 model year. The new car was a sensation! It took Ford just a little over two years to sell a million Mustangs! This back-to-the-sixties example looks just as it would have prowling the streets back in the day. Such classic hot rod items as Mickey Thompson finned aluminum valve covers, a Hurst shifter (with the white shifter ball, of course) and chrome reverse wheels (remember those?) take you back to the days of mini skirts, the British Invasion, and an exploding youth and performance market in the American auto industry. The Mustang actually started a new category called the pony car. This Pony sports the desirable and well-loved 289 V8. The motor is dressed with the aforementioned valve covers and chrome air cleaner, and fortified with an Edelbrock carb, intake, and a set of headers feeding a complete dual exhaust system. The interior is simply delightful for its outstanding condition, and for the very cool period-correct accessories. The bucket seats and carpeting are super black and fresh looking. A woodgrain Mustang steering wheel complements the wood trim on the dash. By now the look is quite familiar to car guys whether or not theyre Ford fans. Added to that is a Sun Super Tach mounted appropriately on the steering column. On the floor, the legendary Hurst shifter with its trademark white ball on top stirs the 3-speed transmission. Underneath the dash is a trio of RAC gauges to complete a look so well integrated to a theme it looks like the work of a top designer, but its just the way things were done on the street in the glory days. Theres even a fire extinguisher mounted next to the shifter. Prairie Bronze Metallic paint sets the tone on the outside, along with more groovy goodies not the least of which is a set of chrome reverse wheels. Naturally the tires are bigger in the back, and a pair of slapper bars aid in hooking up the horsepower and in the presentation of a neat 60s style pony car. The nostalgia continues with the original owners manual and registration card, plus the original owner satisfaction survey. (Is your total family income less than $3000?) It even has the pink slip, Daddy. The only thing missing is an invitation to appear on the Ed Sullivan Show. DISCLAIMER MAXmotive specializes in collectible classic and custom vehicles.
