While the venerable 250 GT series from Ferrari remains rightly celebrated the better part of seven decades after its introduction thanks in no small part to headline creations such as the GTO and SWB the model line had neared its development ceiling after an 11-year production run. As a result, with the aim of creating a more luxurious driving experience that felt equally suited to twisting Alpine roads as it was to lapping Monza, engineers set to work on the new 275 grand tourer that would debut at the 1964 Paris Auto Show.

Regarded as one of the marques greatest hits, just 453 examples of the 275 GTB would be built over the following two years. Behind the more aggressive styling, which was brought to life by the coachbuilders at Scaglietti, lay a 3,286-cc V-12 engine capable of generating 280 horsepower at 7,600 rpm. At the rear, buried below the aerodynamically efficient Kamm tail , was a new five-speed transaxle gearbox to help achieve a top speed approaching 290 km/h. To get the best out of the tubular steel chassis, the Berlinetta became the first Ferrari to gain independent suspension at all four corners. It is thought that approximately 250 of the total built were the earlier short-nose Series I variant, which in turn makes them the rarest of the non-competition 275 GTBs.

Completed on 25 September 1965, chassis number 07723 offered here was originally finished with Argento paint over a Nero leather interior. Arriving with the supplying agent M G Crepaldi, this short-nose example was sold new to the first owner, Mr Alfredo Honegger of Bergamo. Remaining in Italy for the next four years, the 275 was sold and exported to California and swiftly offered for sale by Mike Gertner of Newport Beach. Acquired by William Thomas of Long Beach, chassis 07723 was advertised for sale again in 1972 the car reportedly still wearing its Bergamo plates.

In 1975, Douglas G Simon of Los Angeles, the then owner, commissioned Creative Car Craft with restoring his 275, repainting the body in red and retrimming the interior with Connolly leather. Simon went on to exhibit the 275 at the Ferrari Owners Club USA Concours, winning Best Paint and Best in Class.

Later owned by Marshall D Bell of Manhattan Beach, in 1981 chassis 07723 suffered an accident, with damage to the front-left corner of the car. Repaired and remaining in the Bell family for the next 40 years, this short-nose was acquired by the Gullwing Motors dealer and then purchased by the previous owner in 2013.

As part of a three-year process, the decision was taken to carry out a nut-and-bolt restoration on chassis 07723. The specialists at Beckman Metal Works stripped the car back to bare metal, expertly inspecting and repairing the bodywork and chassis. Once ready for paint, the Scaglietti body was sent over to European Collectibles, which resprayed the car in its factory-correct colour of Argento. Brook Betz of Betz and Peters carried out the full assembly of the Ferrari, with Westminster Auto Upholstery retrimming the interior in Bleu leather. The numerous photographs on file depict what was a labour of love, with no expense spared and an enormous amount of time spent on providing a concours-level finish.

Finished in 2021, this 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB short-nose was awarded Ferrari Classiche certification in November 2021. As per the Red Book , chassis 07723 retains its matching-numbers chassis, engine, gearbox, and differential. Since restoration, the car has covered approximately 300 kilometres and remains as fabulous as when it was first completed.
