1965 Chevrolet Malibu Classic Coupe

The Chevrolet Malibu arrived in 1964 to meet the brands desires for a midsize vehicle to replace the larger Impala. Here, beginning with a car produced in 1965, there is even more than what was available on these vehicles new. Indeed, based on a Schwartz Performance frame, this is a Pro Touring-focused creation that was upgraded throughout during that process, with upgrades including the driveline, suspension, interior and finish.

For many, the 1965 model retains a classic sense as the notorious, limited-production Z16 Chevelle was also from that same model season. In this case, however, it is not a 396 under the hood but a lighter, nimble 5.3L LS V-8 engine installed. This is equipped with Holley Terminator fuel injection, a Truck Norris camshaft and associated Brian Tooley Racing valve train, manifolds feeding the Performance Fabrication custom steel exhaust, and a detailed Performance Rod and Custom radiator. The rest of the driveline comprises a TH350 automatic transmission and a Currie Ford 9-inch, 3.50-geared, limited-slip rear differential. In addition to the frame, there are QA1 adjustable suspension pieces, 4-wheel power disc brakes and power steering, with the undercarriage hardware finished in a no-nonsense appeal.

The hardtop body is massaged to its OEM look and now wears hot red paint, with its factory chrome nicely polished. The interior is customized in a red and black configuration and features a split front bench seat, Vintage Air, Dakota Digital gauges, a three-spoke Grant GT wheel atop a metal-finish tilt steering column, upgraded audio equipment, custom pedals and a chrome column-shift handle. Outside are the Malibu SS emblems, chrome exhaust exits with turndowns, reflective headlamp covers, lower rocker trim and ominous crossed-flag emblems with no displacement shown. To get the car around corners, a set of polished 17-inch American Racing five-spoke wheels featuring blackwall tires by BF Goodrich have been installed on this car as well.
