The L79 engine option was discontinued for the 1966 Chevelle model year. It is suspected the reason is Chevrolet did not want a 350hp 327 engine competing with the new SS396 series Chevelles with 325hp, 360hp, and 375hp 396 cid engines.
The L79 engine option returned for the 1967 Chevelle model year but the horsepower rating was reduced from 350hp to 325hp, presumably so it might only compete with the base 325hp 396 cid SS396 engine. Like the 1965 model year the L79 engine could be ordered in any body style or series except the SS396 sport coupe or SS396 convertible.
