The Chevelle burst onto the scene on the new GM A-body platform that became legendary for being the basis of some of the Kings of the muscle car era including the Pontiac GTO, the Buick Gran Sport, and the Olds 442. The Super Sport option allowed Chevy to enter the muscle car fray. The Super Sport package was available on the upscale Malibu two-door hardtop and convertible models; the option added special exterior brightwork with SS emblems.
