Cool Classics: Chevrolet Chevelle

Chevrolet introduced the Chevelle in 1963 as a 1964 model. Though quite large by today's standards, it was classified as a midsize car. What wasn't midsize was the level of passion garnered from the very beginning, a passion that has continued for decades.

Classic Car Overview

Purchased in SoCal, 1992.

Complete tear down and dis-assembly

Frame blasted, checked, straightened and painted.

Body disassembled, all glass removed, soda blasted.  Trunk pan and rear panel below glass replaced.

All other sheet metal original:  fenders, doors, roof, hood, trunk lid, rear quarters.

Yellow etching primer applied prior to reassembly with new body mounts.

Recent RR code paint to original color, base/clear.  New front window; all other original glass.

New bumpers, grille, trim, stainless, emblems.

Chassis assembled using tubular CCP suspension and sway bars.   New Hotchkis 1” lowering springs.

Rebuilt rear end with new axles, bearings and posi unit.   3.08 original gears.

New front (D52) power disc brakes.  Drilled and slotted rotors.  Complete new rear drum brakes.

Complete new brake lines installed.  Original fuel lines remain.

15 x 6 rally wheels (YS code) with new Goodyear 215-70/15 tires.  New center caps and rings.

Purchased new interior kit (red).  Seat covers, carpet and door panels installed.

New 350 motor built to 70 Z28/LT-1 specs.  Less than 1000 miles.

Weiand intake, Holley 650 carb, GM solid lifter cam, Hooker headers.

Rebuilt turbo 350 trans.

New American Autowire kit installed but factory gages nonfunctioning; SW gages installed.

A hot rod car/cruiser is never done, and this car has several items still be done.  Not a project car as it does run and drive and tagged with insurance so if still interested, here is my assessment of remaining items as of December 2018

Have new red headliner (original was white) and new bows.  Old bows in car. Need all the trim pcs moldings.  Parts available and will likely cost $500.  Needs new sun visors

Install front kick panels.  Have old panels and still usable.

Install glove box.  Have new enclosure but new front speakers encroach the space so must decide which is more important or provide cutout on box top for speaker magnets.

Horn button not installed correctly.  Horns need to be installed.  Have old horns.

Wiper motor works but not connected to switch.  Arms need to be reinstalled.

Console and courtesy light.  Need plastic lenses for light on console.

Steering column has scratched paint, some of my doing taking in and out several times.

Stewart Warner gauges installed and working.  Gas gage works, other factory gauges in panel but not connected.

Missing transmission downshift linkage

Trim letters both front and back need to be installed.  Trunk lettering has some holes covered by body filler and just didn’t pay attention when pick up car and never messed with it.  Hood holes are present but should have installed letters before paint fully cured.  Have new letters for both.

Front disc brakes seem to be sticking slightly.

I think the new tubular suspension and springs make the car ride a little harsh.  Front springs stiff.

Have lots of receipts and photos.

Car was soda blasted and covered with yellow etching primer in 1993/94.  Car interior painted, and body prepped and primed for red paint in 2006.   Body work, new primer and painted car in 2016.

Car painted in 2016 to Regal Red color match with local painter.   He is a small shop in Yukon and does one car at a time.  Have 2 small chip paint spots; one at driver door edge and one at passenger wiper arm.  Paint is good - call it 8.5 out of 10

If the car doesn’t sell, I will redo front suspension, consider reinstalling original 283 motor and finish up all the details.  Really don’t want to spend more money but maybe car has better value being closer to original.

Most of the mechanical work done by me.  Paint, transmission, exhaust and interior work hired out.  Additional photos available if you let me know what you want to see.

Original 283 motor with powerglide trans if interested.  Running when removed.

After all this time it seems crazy to sell but things change.

Thanks for looking.
