With the introduction of its 3000 Mk III model internal designation BJ8 beloved British manufacturer Austin-Healey succeeded in retaining the roadsters sporting, curvaceous essence while expanding it to accommodate 2+2 seating and a slew of new luxuries aimed directly at the American market.
Featuring a wraparound windshield, roll-up windows with swiveling vents, an all-new burl-walnut dashboard, and a quick-action folding soft-top, the new Austin-Healey added sedan-like comfort to the brutish power of its predecessors. A high-lift camshaft, larger SU HD8 carburetors, and power-assisted disc brakes ensured the Mk IIIs place as the ultimate production Austin-Healey. Its the car a lot of guys wanted to have, said concours judge and restorer George Baxter in a 2018 Hemmings retrospective on the model. They ended up with the MG, they ended up with the Triumph, but, truth be told, they coveted the Big Healey.
Per a copy of its British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certified factory record, this Canadian-market 3000 Mk III BJ8 completed production on 9 July 1964, finished in Healey Blue over Blue trim with a Blue soft-top. The document notes wire wheels, a heater, an adjustable steering column, overdrive, and a blue tonneau cover as additional equipment from the factory.
While its early history is unrecorded, this Austin-Healey is said to have benefitted from a comprehensive two-year restoration concluded in 2009. The process reportedly involved completely disassembling and rebuilding the cars body, drivetrain, and interior, and refinishing the exterior along with every aesthetic detail. Now presented in a lovely triple-blue color combination, this 3000 Mk III BJ8 still shows in fine condition 16 years after its painstaking refurbishment. Notably, the engine is confirmed to be numbers-matching.
The car will likely benefit from additional mechanical work for maximum enjoyment in the hands of its next owner, who will recognize it as a lovely example of one of the most beloved British sports cars ever made.
