VW Kombi Van Seeing Resurgence in Popularity

The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. From a cargo carrier with no windows behind the driver's seat to a windowed passenger van with three rows of seats, the possibilities seemed endless.

Classic Car Overview

This 1965 Austin Healey BJ8 Mk III Phase II - s/n 32038 hasbeen a true labor of love. The end result is stunning, finished in a beautifulshade of Primrose Yellow over a rich dark red leather upholstery, with a blackcanvas top. The color combination is sensational, truly making the car, givingit a very sophisticated and period 1960’s look. A lot of time & researchwent into subtly adjusting the shade of yellow to get an intensity not toolight, that it was close to Old English White, & not too bright, so it wasfitting of the colors of the 1960’s era. As seen in the photos, the car comeswith two sets of wheels: Dayton 5” width chrome wires & alloy mini-lites.

I have owned the car ~34 years, purchasing it in 1989. I metthe prior owner at the Palo Alto Concours & was drawn to this Austin Healeyby the fact that it was a numbers matching rust-free California car with nosigns of previous accident damage. The car had previously lived in San Diego,California & based on the Navy badge originally mounted on the front grill, was likely originally owned by a U.S. Naval officer.

This Austin Healey was restored with an emphasis on buildinga truly exceptional driving Austin Healey, & not a concours show car.Having grown up a science student, building engines & tuning 1960’s Britishsports cars, I love the process of methodically going through a car, restoring& sourcing all the best components. By the time I got to the Austin Healey,I had enjoyed owning & doing restoration work on a Mark 1 Sprite, a Mark IISprite, MGB, several Enzo era Ferraris,... Having a passion for Austin Healeys& Ferraris, I found it interesting to learn two of the historic giants ofautomotive design & engineering, Donald Healey & Enzo Ferrari, wereborn the same year, 1898, & then both passed the same year in 1988.

For the restoration, I specifically sought out a smallworkshop, Collin’s Classics, focused solely on British car restoration. I hadplanned to do it slowly & thus had time to carefully research & selectthe color combination & specifications. The engine received a full rebuildwith new pistons, valves, rocker shaft, springs & lead free seats. Thecrank was measured & only required polishing. All new bearings & a newchain were fitted. I added the rear main seal upgrade kit & decided topurchase an aluminum sump, as I liked the look much better & knew it wouldhelp in California summers. A new crank damper was also added. For engine oil,I only use Valvoline VR1 Racing oil with the ZDDP additive to protect camlobes, bearings & rocker gears.

Most importantly, a complete new wiring loom, with originalstyle cloth patterned covering, was fitted with the addition of an electricfan. Prior to re-installing the engine, all new fire-wall trim material wasinstalled. The gearbox went to a trusted local expert for rebuilding, includingnew syncros. Brakes & lines were overhauled and new shock absorbers fitted.

When it came to the suspension, I much prefer the look ofthe Phase I, with the wheel circumference nicely fitting the shape of the wheelarch, to the awkward, tall, stance of the later BJ8s. To accomplish thisstance, custom fabricated aluminum blocks were fitted between the spring &axle, lowering rear end 2". The best fitting tire proved to be the 185x15Vredstein.

The body was sent to a small auto-body shop specializing inEnglish & Italian sports cars. The fenders, doors, hood, trunk, glass, chrome trim, interior etc. were all removed & the body was taken back downto bare metal to assess whether any metalwork was needed. Fortunately the carproved to be a truly rust-free California example. Early on, the car was fittedwith the works rally louvers. The louvers are nicely complemented by beautiful, nippled lens, vintage Marchal foglights, minilite wheels, & aluminum fuelfiller. When it came to which of the chrome parts needed to be re-plated &which had a nice patina that could be retained: original parts, where possiblewas the theme. In the end, most parts were re-chromed.

The interior is a beautiful dark red leather & CollinClassic’s strong attention to detail really shows in the fit & finish. Allmaterials are of very high quality. To name a few, the dash is a beautiful burlwalnut, modern insulation was fitted, the convertible top is to very highstandards,...

After accomplishing my goal of creating a very nice driver, the car was accepted & shown at numerous shows including The Quail, AMotorsport Gathering, Hillsborough Concours and Concours On The Avenue inCarmel.

The restoration was documented in 3 magazine articles, aswell as 2 detailed binders of all invoice receipts, restoration photos,research,.....
