Classic Car Overview

The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud series was a pivotal model in the brands history representing both a shift in production methods and a continued dedication to luxury craftsmanship. As demand for bespoke coachbuilt cars began to decline Rolls-Royce needed a model that could be produced in greater numbers while still accommodating discerning buyers who sought exclusivity. The solution was the Silver Cloud built on a full ladder frame which allowed for both large-scale production and custom coachwork from traditional craftsmen.A key distinguishing feature of the Silver Cloud along with its Bentley S1 counterpart was the introduction of the Standard Steel Saloon body manufactured by Pressed Steel Inc. Designed by J.P. Blatchley this modernized the classic styling of its predecessor the Silver Dawn. The body was primarily steel with aluminum used for the hood trunk and doors. Power came from a smooth inline-six engine paired with a GM Hydramatic automatic transmission delivering the effortless driving experience expected from Rolls-Royce.Three iterations of the Silver Cloud were produced from 1955 to 1966. The second-generation model introduced a 6.2-liter all-aluminum V8 for improved performance while the third-generation Silver Cloud III featured quad headlamps a more sculpted bonnet and a lower-profile grille for a refined updated look. Additionally it included electric windows as standard and a more powerful engine. In total 6699 Silver Cloud III models were produced across various configurations including standard sedans long-wheelbase versions coachbuilt designs hearses and even a few rare shooting brakes. Of these just 2044 were standard Silver Cloud III saloons before the model was succeeded by the Silver Shadow. This 1964 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III is an exceptional example of the model. Factory records indicate that chassis SEV187 was completed in October 1963 as part of the 1964 model year. Originally configured as a right-hand-drive vehicle it was later professionally converted to left-hand drive. Benefiting from an older restoration the car was finished in a beautiful shade of Special Grey complemented by Scarlet Hide leather upholstery gray carpeting and finely crafted burl wood trim on the dashboard and upper door panels as noted in the build sheet. The interior remains in excellent condition with only minimal wear on the seats-reflecting its history as a well-maintained and carefully enjoyed vehicle. Rear passengers are treated to fold-down tray tables vanity mirrors grab handles and footrests ensuring a luxurious experience. The exterior presents beautifully with its glossy paintwork highlighted by elegant red coach lines. Chrome accents including the signature Rolls-Royce grille and Lucas driving lights are in excellent condition. The 15-inch steel wheels finished in body color with matching covers are wrapped in 235/75 Coker Classic whitewall tires. Braking is handled by power-assisted drum brakes providing smooth and confident stopping power. As the final and most refined version of the Silver Cloud series the Cloud III is particularly desirable among collectors. The 6.2-liter V8 paired with large 2-inch S.U. carburetors delivers refined yet capable performance while the GM-derived automatic transmission ensures seamless shifting. While Rolls-Royce and Bentley produced more Cloud/S-series than any previous generation they remained true to the brands reputation for exceptional craftsmanship attention to detail and longevity-qualities that define the Rolls-Royce legacy.
