Classic Car Overview

The 1964 GTO was not its own model. It was an option package on the Pontiac Tempest LeMans, and that is exactly what the car you are looking at is. The idea was hatched in early 1963 when a small team of Pontiac engineers led by John Z. DeLorean realized the 389 cubic inch V8 from the full-size Bonneville would drop straight into the midsize Tempest. A week after the first conversation, they were doing burnouts in a prototype. GM had a strict rule prohibiting engines over 330 cubic inches in midsize cars. DeLorean broke the rule anyway, convinced that the car would sell, and proved himself right immediately. The 1964 GTO is widely credited as the first true American muscle car, and this one is finished in white with gold leather, backed by an original window sticker showing an MSRP of $3,637.76 and a Michigan Auto Inspection Services report and documentation file.

Under the hood is the 389 cubic inch V8 with a four barrel carburetor, backed by a Turbo 350 automatic and dual exhaust. DeLorean borrowed the GTO name directly from the Ferrari 250 GTO, using the Italian term Gran Turismo Omologato, which referred to production cars certified for road racing by the FIA. Adopting it was a blunt and deliberate callout to Ferrari. This car has been upgraded with an aluminum radiator, heavy duty front and rear sway bars, and front disc brakes, giving it a more sorted and capable driving experience than it had when it left the factory. The Rally I wheels with redline tires are period correct and sharp.

Inside, the gold leather interior is clean and well kept with GTO floor mats in place. Digital gauges mounted under the dash give you a real-time read on everything happening under the hood. A Pontiac digital retro stereo handles the audio while keeping the vintage feel of the interior intact. Factory air conditioning is present, which was a notable option on a performance car in 1964 and adds a layer of everyday usability that makes this car as enjoyable on a warm afternoon drive as it is at a car show.

The original window sticker and documentation that comes with this car is the kind of thing that separates a car with a story from one that just looks the part. A 1964 GTO with its paperwork intact, in a clean white and gold combination, with the mechanical upgrades to back up its heritage, is exactly what the serious collector market has been paying close attention to for years.
