For 1964, the Chevrolet Corvette built on the success and popularity it had gained with the 1963 Sting Ray. Futuristic and streamlined style combined with superb performance allowed Chevrolets claim of being Americas Sports Car an unchallenged statement. Only minor styling details were visible, such as the removal of the troublesome center pillar from the back window of the coupe, the deletion of the faux hood air vents, and a small redesign to the fuel cap emblem by the addition of concentric rings around the crossed flags design. Bucket seats saw a revised stitching pattern that was deemed to be more durable, and the rocker panel moldings were modernized with a simple design change. What wasnt immediately visible was the addition of more sound absorbing insulation and a redesigned shift lever boot, both contributing to quieter rides. Under the hood, just one displacement, 327 cubic inches, was offered but with four distinct horsepower ratings. The entry-level 250-HP as well as the 300-HP versions both utilized the Carter AFB four-barrel carburetors and smooth-running hydraulic lifters. For the performance engines, there were a few changes as both employed a higher-lift special cam with mechanical lifters, while the 365-HP version was now using a Holley four-barrel carburetor. Performance-oriented buyers responded and, for 1964, sales of the Corvette convertible increased by over 27.5%.
With summer just around the corner, we are happy to offer what might just be the perfect Corvette with which you can have fun in the sun. 1 of the 13,925 convertibles produced that year, this is an outstanding example that looks great and is simply fun and exhilarating to drive. Under the hood resides this cars original numbers-matching 327-cid, 365-HP V-8 engine along with its original four-speed manual transmission. It retains the proper #2818 Holley carburetor and all visible engine numbers correlate to confirm this matching-numbers powerful V-8. Our inspection showed this sweet Corvette has been given a high-quality respray in its original Silver Satin and the manual black soft top looks fresh and new and fits just as it was engineered to look and operate. Much of the interior remains original with the comfortable black vinyl seats and black carpeting both appearing to be with this car from new. One upgrade has been the addition of a Vintage Air air-conditioning system which was professionally installed. This Sting Ray is fitted with a set of the cast aluminum knock-off wheels which are wearing a set of BFGoodrich Silvertown Radial P205/75R15 redline tires date coded for July 2023. Mounted in the instrument cluster, the 160-MPH speedometer, as well as all gauges, are clean, clear and functional with the odometer showing right at 56,400 miles which appear to be from new. Also mounted in this cluster is the 6,500 RPM redline tachometer, found only on the performance editions of these cars.
More at home on the open road, rather than sitting in a private collection or museum setting, this convertible has been treated well during its lifetime, and today it sits ready for action. In one of the many magazine ads promoting the 1964 Corvette touted that, This Much Performance is Like Money in the Bank. We believe that still applies today, and is sure to deliver compound interest wherever you drive this American icon of speed, style and motoring satisfaction.
