Windy City Warriors

From around 1956 until the mid 1980s, Dodge, Plymouth and even Chrysler squads were the most ubiquitous police cars in North America. In fact, the biggest department, the NYPD, used Plymouth and Dodge squads almost exclusively until the rear-drive M body car was finally axed in 1989.

Savoy Faire is Everywhere

The no-frills Savoy two-door sedan was home to another engine of considerable repute, the infamous 413 Max Wedge, a Super Stock monster block Chrysler introduced in the spring of 1962.

Classic Car Overview

1964 Chevrolet Corvair Monza The Corvair was highly unusual for a domestic car, with its air-cooled, rear-mounted engine featuring the compact horizontally opposed piston layout of Porsche and VW Beetle engines. It also had an all-independent suspension and unitized construction. Some called the Corvair the poor mans Porsche. A bit of trivia to leave you with, the Corvair name is derived from a combination of Corvette and Bel Air! For consignment, a Chevrolet Corvair Monza edition from 1964. This car will need some TLC as it shows nicely, but closer inspection has some rust bubbling and cracking of the exterior paint. This car is badged as a Monza and the engine bay reveals a non turbo charged flat 6-cylinder engine. The interior has been redone, and it runs and drives just fine. Exterior A respray of blue presents in good condition. A few dents and dings are present throughout the all steel body, along with some underlying rust bubbling and cracking. Chrome and brite-work, and original badging are all there, and correct, with gaps that are straight and true. In lieu of the round turbo logo found on the rear deck of these cars, there is a crossed flag badge. A stainless steel rocker trim is on either side and all window trimmings and glass are clean. Corvair style wheel covers are wrapped by correct size radials. Interior A swing of the drivers door reveals a clean utilitarian no frills interior. 2 large blue color vinyl buckets in good condition stretch across the front and a large bench is shoehorned into the rear of the car. The drivers seat has minor soiling from usage. A floor shifter sits within ergonomic reach of the driver and in front is an original padded dash with some dents and dings, but mostly original condition. The gauge cluster is an aluminum stain panel, houses all the essentials, there is an additional tachometer hanging below on the drivers left. Carpeting floods the floors and is in black and clean with no fading. Headliner is mostly clean and un-ripped. An aftermarket radio has been installed and is an AM/FM/single CD version. Drivetrain Mounted into the rear is the horizontally opposed 6-cylinder 164ci boxer engine. It has dual 1-barrel carburetors to feed it fossils and air and there is a 4-speed manual transmission on the back. Undercarriage Underneath we see surface rust mostly reserved for the rear suspension and framing near the back. The remainder of the floorpan is rust free and solid steel for the floorpans and rockers. 4 wheel independent suspension and drum brakes are all around. Drive-Ability This car started right up and on the test track was mechanically sound. I noticed several things not working such as the speedometer and odometer, both tachometers, and the reverse lights were nonfunctioning. The car handles well and has solid braking for the panic stop test. With some minor TLC you can have a really nice and forward thinking rear engine sports car. You have a classic that is a driver, survivor, and unique looking concept that lasted for a 10 year run.
