Classic Car Overview
This 1964 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu SS is a real deal Super Sport with great options! Heading into the 1964 model year, Chevrolet seemed to be missing mid-size vehicle in their passenger car lineup. On one hand, the GM marque had compact cars with the Corvair and Chevy II/Nova and on the other size Chevrolet had full-size cars such as the Biscayne, Bel Air, and Impala. That gap was filled in 1964 with the introduction of the Chevelle, a car that straddled the gap between a compact and a full size. The Chevelle shared a platform with other GM mid-size models including the Pontiac Tempest, Oldsmobile F-85, and Buick Skylark. The new mid-size Chevelle line was divided into two distinct trim levels, the entry level Chevelle 300 series and plusher Chevelle Malibu Series. Up front, the new Chevelle had its own unique grille and front end design that diverged from the Chevy IIs single headlight and wider spaced grille look but was, to an extent, reminiscent of the full-size passenger cars with a similar looking grille pattern and a pair of dual headlights. The rear end design more closely resembled that of a Chevy II with single taillight pods on either side of the decklid. Further elevating the Malibu series was the availability of the Super Sport SS option package, which gave the new Chevelle Malibu a bit more of a sporty look and feel. Special trim moldings and SS emblems adorned the exterior of the Malibu SS and stepped up the exterior appearance.
