Launched at the Turin Motor Show in 1957, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale was aerodynamic innovation come to life. Sharing a chassis with the Giulietta Spider and wearing a sensational design inspired by Carrozzeria Tourings legendary Disco Volante racing cars as well as Bertones radical Berlina Aerodinamica Tecnica (B.A.T.) concepts, the Sprint Speciale showcased lightweight construction, with a graceful domed roofline and elegantly peaked fenders.
The extraordinary coachwork changed only slightly when the Giulia series replaced the Giulietta in 1963, featuring an enlarged 1.6-liter version of the twin-cam engine, as well as front disc brakes. Though the rest of Alfa Romeos lineup saw new styling to go with the name change, the Sprint Speciale was considered enough of a classic in its own time that Bertones otherworldly design remained essentially untouched.
While details of this Giulia Sprint Speciales early history remain scant, production information on file from Alfa Romeo indicates that it was initially delivered to Conselve, Italy, near Venice, on 2 January 1965. It is later known to have been registered in Udine in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Northeast Italy, prior to being imported to the United States in the mid-1980s.
Following its arrival stateside, the car was treated to a comprehensive restoration to its current presentation. Work included a multi-stage refinishing in its present shade of Bianco over a tastefully trimmed mix of dark and light blue fabric upholstery. The Giulia Sprint Speciales potent 1.6-liter twin-cam four-cylinder engine likewise displays the hallmarks of an extensive restoration, featuring many period-correct components while being fed by twin Weber 40DCOE two-barrel carburetors.
Ideal for both driving and display, this Sprint Speciale presents an alluring opportunity to acquire one of Italys most celebrated automotive designs. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/auctions/mo25/.
