From around 1956 until the mid 1980s, Dodge, Plymouth and even Chrysler squads were the most ubiquitous police cars in North America. In fact, the biggest department, the NYPD, used Plymouth and Dodge squads almost exclusively until the rear-drive M body car was finally axed in 1989.
The no-frills Savoy two-door sedan was home to another engine of considerable repute, the infamous 413 Max Wedge, a Super Stock monster block Chrysler introduced in the spring of 1962.
Classic Car Overview
With approximately 10 miles since a thorough mechanical overhaul, here is a 1963 Impala SS 409 4-speed that looks, runs, and sounds like a legend. Starting with a clean car that now shows 53823 actual miles, heres whats new. The 64 409 X-block engine is completely overhauled and balanced. The correct 63 Borg-Warner 4-speed manual transmission was just rebuilt. The car has an all-new interior, all-new front suspension, new shocks and springs, all-new wiring harnesses, new gas tank, new 4-core radiator and a complete new exhaust system including the correct 409/425 exhaust manifolds. That precious engine block was bored .030 over, and fitted with Ross 11:1 forged pistons and billet steel rods, then balanced. An Isky cam with solid lifters and new pushrods activate new rocker arms and stainless valves. On top, the correct twin 4-barrels and distributor get everything moving. The driveshaft is balanced and new u-joints are installed to transfer all 425 horsepower smoothly. The wheels are correct. 409 fans know that the same 14x6 wheels used on station wagons do the job here. Their offset provides the right clearance for the big 409 and the accompanying hardware. SS wheels covers and Goodrich Silvertown whitewalls complete the classic look. Indeed the white exterior is reminiscent of the Super Stock machines of Dyno Don Nicholson, Dave Strickler and others that made the 4-speed, dual quad 409 the stuff of legend and subject of the hit Beach Boys tune. A blue interior with amazingly comfy bucket seats features a full length center console and a functioning factory tach. Better to shift with, my dear. A Hurst shifter complete with the famous white ball is at your beck and call. The whole car is neat and clean, and youll appreciate all the new hardware and details such as the correct hose clamps. A chrome dual snorkel air cleaner and chrome valve covers light up the engine room. The alternator even has the correct large pulley for high rpm action, and its firmly anchored in place with the proper hardware. The undercarriage is a real standout on this one and the trunk is the kind thatll have you leaving the lid open at shows. And then theres the drive. Youll know why she always turned in the fastest time. The miles on the build are test only, but they verify that everything is in order. The doors and hood open and close straight and smooth. Chevrolet history is sprinkled with legendary cars and engines. A 409 powered Impala SS 4-speed has to rank near the top. This fine 1963 Chevrolet Impala 409/425 horsepower SS 2-door Hardtop is fresh and ready to go. DISCLAIMER MAXmotive specializes in collectible classic and custom vehicles.
