Chevrolet set the automotive world on fire in the fall of 1962 when the all-new Corvette Sting Ray was unleashed. While many pundits of the day immediately started to conclude that GMs inspiration must have come from the equally sleek and sporty E-Type Jaguar which had premiered two years earlier, the truth was the new Corvettes styling had come from designs created by GMs Vice President of Styling Bill Mitchell. Based on his XP-700, the original Sting Ray, the new Corvette copied the front wedge designs which flowed through the sleek rear-end fascia. With refinement provided by Larry Shinoda, the production Corvette was a bumper-to-bumper winning silhouette of perfection.

While removable hardtops had been offered for previous models, the new-for-1963 enclosed edition was a major step forward, adding significantly to the slipstream and smoothness of the entire package. Drivers complained of limited rearward visibility, and GM quickly resolved that by removing the split in future models.
