From around 1956 until the mid 1980s, Dodge, Plymouth and even Chrysler squads were the most ubiquitous police cars in North America. In fact, the biggest department, the NYPD, used Plymouth and Dodge squads almost exclusively until the rear-drive M body car was finally axed in 1989.

Savoy Faire is Everywhere

The no-frills Savoy two-door sedan was home to another engine of considerable repute, the infamous 413 Max Wedge, a Super Stock monster block Chrysler introduced in the spring of 1962.

Classic Car Overview

This 1962 Studebaker Lark Regal convertible is finished in white over a black and white vinyl interior and is powered by a 259ci V8 paired with a three-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Additional equipment includes a Twin-Traction differential, a power-operated black soft top, power steering, and a push-button radio. The car is said to have been refurbished over a ten-year period during prior ownership in North Carolina, and it was acquired by its current owner in 2015. Subsequent maintenance is said to have included rebuilds of the transmission and overdrive, fluid changes, and replacement of some interior and exterior trim. This Lark Regal convertible is now offered on behalf of the current owner by his son with an owner’s manual, a soft top boot, and a clean Tennessee title.

The exterior was refinished in white during previous ownership and features side mirrors, dual exhaust outlets, and chrome trim. The power-operated black soft top was also replaced, and the current owner has changed the hydraulic fluid for its mechanism in addition to replacing some chrome emblems and trim. A black vinyl boot covers the soft top when it is not in use. Rust is noted on the bottom of the doors and rocker panels, there is a scratch on the passenger door beneath the trim, and there are runs in the paint on the right side of the rear deck behind the roof. Close-up photos of the paint and trim are provided in the gallery below.

Steel wheels wear polished Studebaker hubcaps and Goodyear tires at each corner, which the seller states have covered approximately 200 miles since they were installed. A spare is stored under a replacement houndstooth cover in the trunk, and the car is equipped with power steering.

The interior was reupholstered by the previous owner and features seats trimmed in black vinyl with white inserts as well as matching door panels and a white-painted metal dashboard. Appointments include a two-spoke steering wheel, front lap belts, a push-button radio, and hand-crank windows. The current owner has reportedly fitted a replacement carpet kit, rebuilt the rear window regulators, and re-routed the control cables for the heat and vents. Two holes are noted where the clock would ordinarily reside in the dashboard.

Instrumentation includes a replacement 120-mph speedometer and a combination gauge showing fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and amperage. The five-digit odometer shows approximately 250 miles, and total mileage is unknown.

The 259ci V8 is said to have been rebuilt during prior ownership and sends power to the rear wheels through a column-shifted three-speed manual transmission and a Twin-Traction differential. The seller states that during current ownership the transmission and overdrive unit were rebuilt, the overdrive cable was re-rerouted, the differential fluid was replaced, an electric fuel pump was fitted, and the rear motor mount was adjusted to center the driveshaft.
