Classic Car Overview

Gateway Classic Cars of San Antonio/Austin is proud to present this 1962 Plymouth Sport Fury, a bold early-1960s Mopar finished in a striking red exterior over a black interior. Built during the early years of the American muscle-car movement, the Sport Fury combined distinctive Virgil Exner-era styling with serious V8 performance. Documentation included with the vehicle identifies this example as a Golden Commando and notes that it was built to compete in the developing muscle-car and drag-racing market.

Under the hood is a 440 CID big-block V8 that the provided documentation states has been stroked to 540 cubic inches. The engine is equipped with a factory-style cross-ram intake, dual Carter AFB-style carburetors, 413 Max Wedge exhaust manifolds, a 10.5:1 compression ratio, ARP head bolts, and factory-style I-beam connecting rods. Power is sent through an automatic transmission, creating a combination with unmistakable big-block Mopar character.

Recent fuel-system work documented with the car includes replacement of the fuel tank and sending unit, new fuel lines and filters, and a complete rebuild and synchronization of both carburetors. The carburetors received new floats, seats, accelerator pumps, and related components before being tuned for smooth operation.

The engine also received compression and leak-down testing, with the documented results noted as acceptable for the engines age. Additional service includes replacement valve-cover, oil-pan, and windage-tray gaskets, a Mallory electronic distributor and coil, new spark plugs, Accel ceramic plug wires, and an oil and filter change. New left and right rear mufflers were also installed.
Braking and drivetrain service included rear brake repairs, replacement braking components, a complete system flush and bleed, and adjustment of the parking brake. The differential pinion seal and axle seal were also replaced. Cooling upgrades include a 16-inch electric pusher fan with a relay and temperature switch, an upgraded 130-amp alternator, a fan shroud, and a new temperature-sending unit.

Electrical work includes a new Group 24F battery, repairs to the dashboard illumination, front corner lights, and rear license-plate lights. The fuel gauge was also addressed with a factory NOS sending unit to help restore accurate fuel-level readings.
Inside, the black cabin keeps the presentation focused and period-inspired. The documentation notes an unusual 180-mph speedometer, providing a fitting visual reminder of the performance intentions behind this Golden Commando-era Plymouth.
With its documented 540 CID stroker big block, cross-ram induction, dual Carter-style carburetors, Max Wedge exhaust manifolds, extensive recent service, and distinctive red-over-black presentation, this 1962 Plymouth Sport Fury offers a compelling combination of early Mopar styling and serious performance hardware.
