From around 1956 until the mid 1980s, Dodge, Plymouth and even Chrysler squads were the most ubiquitous police cars in North America. In fact, the biggest department, the NYPD, used Plymouth and Dodge squads almost exclusively until the rear-drive M body car was finally axed in 1989.

HISTORIC BACKGROUND:  The Galaxie series name was introduced in 1959 as Ford’s high-line full-size response to Chevrolet’s Impala.  It proved so successful, that in 1962 all full-size Fords wore the Galaxie nameplate, with the highest-level models wearing the Galaxie 500XL moniker.  The Galaxie line continued as a Ford mainstay through 1974.

Throughout the 1960s, stylists reigned supreme at Detroit’s “Big Three” auto companies.  The government had not yet imposed their “park bench” bumper requirements, nor their horsepower-choking emission standards.  For these reasons – and many more – this 1962 Galaxie 500XL is now well recognized and coveted as one of the handsomest full-size convertibles of the entire decade.

DRIVE REPORT & VIDEO – This is the best driving 1960s car I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing.  It truly drives as it was designed to…NOT the ”tired old car with new paint” that is so common.  Owned by a former president of the Atlanta chapter of Vintage Thunderbird Club International (VTCI) who is very knowledgeable about vintage Fords and fussy about his cars.  Beautiful throughout with a glorious interior and engine compartment.

A nice little video of the car on the road can be seen via the YouTube feature on this Autotrader Classics ad.

OPERATIONAL REPORT – The car drives exceptionally well with it's responsive rebuilt engine, fully serviced transmission, and new power steering hydraulic cylinder.  Has NEW top, and NEW tires...ready to go and enjoy! The wipers, all exterior lights and turn signals were tested during the photo-shoot and worked.  The clock has been quartz-ed.  The radio and rear speaker are working.

The only items we noted as non-operational were the horn and lighter.

DOCUMENTED SOUTHERN CAR:  The DSO (District Sales Office) code on this Galaxie XL is 22, for Charlotte, North Carolins.

ABOUT ME… I am an avid Classic Car enthusiast.  After retiring from 30 years of Sales & Marketing in a Global 100 company, I began buying and selling Classic Cars and Collectibles as a collector and for friends and clients.  This classic belongs to a friend and fellow VTCI club member.

IMPORTANT DOCUMENT & CONDITION OF SALE REMARKS:  Bill of Sale and Vehicle Registration documents will be provided to the Buyer.

NOTE:  The state of Georgia does not require titles for pre-1986 vehicles.  Instead of a title, “Non-Title” appears in the title field of the Vehicle Registration.  Since Georgia requires proof of ownership before Vehicle Registration documents can be issued, the current Vehicle Registration becomes the government-issued document of ownership.  ALL states must respect the DMV laws of all other states…so the car can be registered, insured, and driven in ANY state.  Whether your state also issues a title or not, is entirely dependent upon your state’s DMV laws.

This Vehicle is sold strictly as-shown and on a final as-is basis without any warranties expressed or implied due to age. Even the very best and most valuable classics will require additional maintenance and service - often without warning.  Therefore, please expect to continue - as the new owner and caretaker of this classic - to perform additional maintenance and repairs.  We hope that you are able to enjoy the car without the need for an immediate repair - but understand that this indeed could be found necessary.  As seasoned collectors know, every time you start (or attempt to start) a classic car is a new experience...it could be a wonderful ride, or a new repair to undertake.  That is the nature of the hobby, and this car (or any classic car) should not be purchased if you are not prepared for this reality. We have presented the car accurately to the best of our ability, but oversights are possible.  Therefore you are welcome to examine the vehicle in person by appointment.  All sales are final.

Since this car is driven locally for enjoyment rather than for long distance trips, we recommend that it be transported to its new locale.

We remind you to be sure to review ALL the images and ALL the captions for this classic because - in addition to this description - they relate important information too!

FINAL NOTE...IMPERFECTIONS – The car is very nice, most certainly one of the nicest of this year/make/model extant.  But because there is no such thing as a perfect car, please expect some imperfections.  Because we endeavor to place the camera everywhere that you can look, you will notice most imperfections yourself.  However, in the last set of images, we show several close-ups of imperfections of the type you should expect.
