Classic Car Overview

In the rather large story book of the Ford Thunderbird, the chapter of the 1961-1963 generation is a special one. This sleeked-down version of Fords personal luxury coupe/convertible replaced the glitzy, over-styled Square Bird which preceded it. These space-age T-birds had a couple of fitting nicknames: the Bullet Bird (likely due to its pointy-nosed profile) and the Rocket Bird (likely due to its taillight housings that resembled the exhaust ports of a jet airplane).

On offer here is a 1961 Bullet Bird. This Thunderbird shows just 57,274 miles, which is believed to be accurate. The car was given a high-quality repaint in the correct Raven black color in 1992, and the paint still gleams and while the chrome on the original bumpers is a bit hazy, the rest of the bodys various chrome and stainless-steel accents present well. Panel fit and alignment is excellent and all the glass, including the windshield, is original. Overall, this T-bird shows as a nice, driver quality car.

Swing open the door and youre greeted by a crisp, correctly restored interior. Look around (and at the window sticker copy in the cars folder) and youll notice this bird is loaded. In addition to the standard power steering, power brakes and automatic transmission are options that include air conditioning, power windows and the tilt-away steering wheel.

Under the hood is the original 390 4-barrel, 300 hp Thunderbird Special V8. Rebuilt in 1998 and with minimal miles added since, this smooth mill starts and runs great. Being a luxury coupe, this is no rumbling muscle car but it still moves out swiftly when you step into the 390s secondaries. The power brakes and steering likewise are smooth operators. Overall, this classic example of early 60s glamour is a joy to drive.
