Classic Car Overview

When Citron unveiled the DS19 at the 1955 Paris Motor Show, it stunned the motoring world. Within a single day, thousands of orders were placed as buyers were captivated by its unconventional silhouette and groundbreaking engineering. Where most manufacturers of the era persisted with upright, body-on-frame sedans, Citrons daring flagship introduced a sleek, aerodynamic profile paired with innovations that would remain unmatched for decades.

At the heart of the DS was the marques ingenious hydropneumatic suspension systema self-leveling, fully independent design that delivered a ride quality unlike anything else on the road. Combined with front-wheel drive, inboard front disc brakes, and power-assisted steering, the DS offered refinement, handling, and safety that rivaled automobiles costing far more. Flaminio Bertonis flowing bodywork only amplified the futuristic impression, with unbroken surfaces and dramatic proportions that marked a radical departure from conventional postwar motoring. The DS was not merely a new model; it was a revolution.

Demand for an open version of the DS followed almost immediately. To answer it, Citron entrusted Henri Chapron, among Frances most respected coachbuilders. Chaprons Cabriolet was far more than a saloon with the roof removed: the chassis was reinforced, the rear fenders subtly recontoured, and a flat rear deck was fashioned to house the folding top. Distinctive touches, such as the flush-fitting roof and chrome indicator housings, lent the cabriolet a unique identity while preserving the DSs unmistakable futurism. Hand-built in small numbers, these cars were officially sanctioned and sold through Citron dealers, ensuring their status as some of the marques most coveted creations.

The example offered here, chassis number 4200229, is documented by Citron Heritage archivist Guillaume Keller as a 1961 DS19 Cabriolet. Its body number, 0013-000056, corresponds with another car built the same year, suggesting some interchange between factory and coachbuilder during production. The fitted engine is of later Citron manufacture, but the car remains a genuine example of Chaprons rare and celebrated cabriolet series.

Finished in Blanc Carrare, a subtle hue that carries a mint-like tone in certain light, the car presents with refined elegance and a distinctly period-correct character. Marchal foglamps lie upfront, incorporated into the body in the most utterly French way, while rare Robergel turbine-style wheel covers cap the wheels in proper Gallic flair. Of particular note are the rare early ashtray front wings, a feature highly prized among connoisseurs for their scarcity and connection to the earliest DS production.

Inside, the eccentric charm continues with Citrons hallmark single-spoke steering wheel and column-mounted gear selector for the three-speed semi-automatic. The cabin is upholstered in dark green leather, complemented by a matching canvas convertible top, creating a cohesive and striking color theme. The seating surfaces display light creasing that speaks to careful use without diminishing the overall impression of quality and care.

The engine bay is beautifully detailed, centered on the distinctive inline-four. In keeping with thoughtful preservation, the hydraulic system has been converted to the more durable, water-resistant LHM green fluid, though original LHS details remain intact, providing a fascinating link to the cars early specification.

This DS19 Cabriolet presents beautifully and remains in excellent condition, reflecting the quality of its restoration and the conscientious stewardship of its custodians. Its history includes display at the 2018 Pebble Beach Concours dElegance and time within a prominent Western-based collection. Documentation accompanying the car is comprehensive, with records attesting to its careful maintenance and preservation.

Today, Chaprons DS cabriolets stand at the pinnacle of postwar Citron collectability, blending the marques daring engineering with the craftsmanship of one of Frances most celebrated coachbuilders. With its rare specification, elegant color scheme, and distinguished provenance, this 1961 DS19 Cabriolet represents an exciting opportunity for discerning enthusiasts of advanced design and classic French motoring.
