Classic Car Overview

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sothebys Monterey event, 15 - 16 August 2025.
Offered Without Reserve $20,000 - $30,000 USD

  • Sold new in Italy, with just three owners from new
  • Raced in Europe during the mid-1980s
  • Powered by Alfa Romeos venerable 1,290-cc inline-four with Sprint Veloce-style dual side-draft Weber carburetors
  • Imported to the United States in late 1988 and raced in SVRA events through 1995
  • An eminently enjoyable vintage racer in need of recommissioning

Unveiled at the 1954 Turin Motor Show, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint coupe was the first of a popular new model range that would also include a four-door sedan and two-seater spider. With beautiful lines by Bertones Franco Scaglione, the Sprint looked sporting yet also elegant. Its advanced 1.3-liter engine, conceived by ex-Ferrari engineer Giuseppe Busso, boasted an aluminum block and hemispherical head with twin camshafts and would remain in production for four decades. A free-revving and feisty jewel of an engine, it has been seducing enthusiasts with one of the best four-cylinder soundtracks of the post-war era since its inception. The glamourous and sprightly Sprint, made for such a winning formula that orders had to be suspended for a few days immediately after launch as the factory became overrun with orders.

This Giulietta Sprint was first registered in Italy in 1962, according to a copy of its original registration. A German historical vehicle document in the accompanying history file indicates that the first owner retained the car until 1984, after which it migrated to West Germany. FISA documentation on file from this time indicates that it had by then been upgraded to the desirable Sprint Veloce specification, including the fitment of a more powerful replacement engine breathing through dual Weber side-draft carburetors.

From 1985 through 1988, its second owner drove the car in historic racing events throughout Europe. Photos on file dating from 1987 and 1988 show the car on track in white and blue livery. In late 1988, the consignor acquired the Giulietta Sprint and imported it to the United States, adding it to a stable of competition-oriented Alfa Romeos. He would have the car recommissioned and painted in its current shade of red before driving it in Sportscar Vintage Racing Association events starting in 1989. In 1991, the engine was rebuilt. An SVRA logbook on file shows the last race it participated in was at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in 1995.

Now in need of recommissioning, this well-loved and eminently capable Giulietta Sprint, complete with a thrilling, Sprint Veloce-specification engine, is ready for its next caretaker to bring it out of retirement and back into competition. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/auctions/mo25/.
