Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale:

Only 420 Miles on the rebuilt motor.

A rare and truly unique Italian sports car with one of the oldest and most respected brand names in the sports car world.  This 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale (chassis AR*177162*) is one of 1,366 examples produced and was reportedly discovered in a French chateau before being brought to the US, where it was refurbished in 2017 and 2018 by Niederst Restorations of Ventura, California. Power is provided by a rebuilt 1.4-liter DOHC inline-four paired with a five-speed manual gearbox, and the car is finished in Nuovo Blu Pozzi over a tan leather interior. Items replaced during the restoration included the bumpers, exterior rubber molding, shocks, springs, brake master cylinder, fuel tank, water pump, clutch, differential, exhaust system, and more as detailed below. This Sprint Speciale has covered approximately 420 miles on the fully rebuilt motor and since the work was completed and is now offered with a clean California title.

The Sprint Speciale was penned by Franco Scaglione at Bertone, after the design house had experimented with low-drag bodywork that resulted in the B.A.T. concept cars. This example was restored in 2017 and 2018, including cutting, filling, and welding the rocker panels, lower door skins, lower front fenders, and windshield cowling. The floors were also replaced, and the car was stripped, coated in epoxy primer, and repainted in Ferrari Nuovo Blu Pozzi. Replacement bumpers, rubber molding, and front and rear lights have been sourced, and the grille and other chrome trim were refinished.

Silver-finished 15″ Fergat wheels wear polished Alfa Romeo wheel covers and Vredestein tires. New shocks and springs were installed during the restoration along with new brake lines, a master cylinder, and shoes for the triple-shoe front brakes and twin-shoe rears. Note the deflector windscreen mounted on the cowl.

Quality Auto Upholstery of Ventura, California refinished the interior with new tan leather upholstery, sun visors, a white perforated headliner, and gray square-weave carpeting. New seat mounts, interior trim, dome lamps, and an ashtray were installed, and the wiper assembly, window regulators, door lock assemblies, heater, and switches were refurbished.

The painted dashboard features a black leather pad and is fronted by a refinished three-spoke steering wheel. Refurbished instrumentation includes a 140-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and gauges for water temperature, oil pressure, oil temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer was reset in 2018 and now shows just over 420 miles. Total mileage is unknown.

The twin-cam inline-four was rebuilt during the restoration and was updated to 1,400cc-specification with new JE pistons, liners, camshafts, Carrillo connecting rods, bearings, valves, and valve guides. A replacement alternator, water pump, wiring harness, fuel lines, and fuel tank accompany a crackle black-finished cam cover, a cast aluminum intake plenum, a F.I.S.P.A. air cleaner housing, and dual Weber 40 DCOE carburetors. A valve adjustment was performed during the break-in period along with an oil change.

Shifting is through a five-speed manual transmission that reportedly received new gears and synchros during the refurbishment. A new clutch, rear differential, and new exhaust system were also installed. The underside was painted in semi-gloss black at the time of the repaint. A jack and spare tire are included in the sale.  Truly a gorgeous car at every angle.
