Classic Car Overview
To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sothebys Hershey event, 9 - 10 October 2024.
Offered Without Reserve $50,000 - $60,000 USD
Initially unveiled as a concept car for General Motors Motorama car show in 1954, the Pontiac Bonneville Special featured dashing lines by noted stylist Harley J. Earl and eight-cylinder power. However, the nameplate would enter production in 1957 as the top trim level of the Star Chief two-door coupe or convertible body styles, complete with fuel injection and every available factory option. Just one year later, the Bonneville name was applied to a separate full-size model at a lower price. A second generation hit dealership floors in 1959 with a greatly expanded lineup of body styles, which included two-door convertibles, four-door sedans, and a station wagon.
A pivotal vehicle from Pontiacs storied history, this second-generation Bonneville introduced the split grille motif and wide-track chassis that would continue to define the brands identity until its demise in 2010. This model moved down-market and featured fewer luxury options as standard, but the body-style range expanded to sedans and a station wagon. A 389-cubic-inch V-8 was available as the sole engine and provided from 215 to 345 horsepower, depending on the carburetor setup and transmission.
This 1960 Pontiac Bonneville was produced at the Lansing, Michigan plant and finished in Shelltone Ivory over a tri-tone red interior with front bucket seats. Under the hood, a Tri-Power 318-horsepower V-8 engine is paired with a four-speed HydraMatic transmission. The interior is furnished with several welcome amenities, including air conditioning, power steering, and a Wonder Bar radio. The exterior is equally well-equipped with delightful period touches like whitewall tires, an A-pillar spotlight, and Pontiacs uniquely designed eight-lug wheels, which incorporated aluminum brake drums as the hub.
An exceptionally stylish piece of mid-century Americana, this 1960 Pontiac Bonneville is an ideal ride for cruising with friends and family, thanks to its generous dimensions and V-8 power.
