Classic Car Overview

Comparisons between the original Ford Thunderbird and the first-generation Chevrolet Corvette may seem obvious at first after all, both were sporty and stylish two-seat roadsters from two arch-rivals of the American auto industry. Yet the truth is, they were two vastly different cars with different purposes. The Corvette was Chevrolets response to the influx of imported sports cars hitting our shores in the late 1940s and early 1950s, and its creators always fought for it to be a pure sports car. Meanwhile, Ford took a much more traditionally American approach with the Thunderbird, offering buyers a more luxurious, relaxed take on a sporty roadster.

Fords formula worked well so well, in fact, that GM almost killed the Corvette due to slow sales. So, for the 2nd Generation T-Bird, introduced in 1958, Ford doubled down, defining a new market segment for the so-called personal luxury car. Ford management felt that the original cars two-seat configuration limited sales, so the new Squarebird, as it would become known, became a full four-seater in either coupe or convertible body styles. An entirely new car from bumper to bumper, the T-Bird had a new unibody platform with fresh new styling for the era. It was wider, longer, and lower, with equipment including factory air conditioning, power soft top, and leather trim, while engine choices included the popular 300bhp 352 cu.in. FE-series V8, or an optional 430 cu.in. MEL big block, a rarely selected option. Built for just three model years (1958-1960) the Squarebird outsold the original 55-57 Thunderbird by nearly 4 to 1, establishing the Thunderbird as one of Fords most successful and recognizable model lines.

This outstanding 1960 Ford Thunderbird Convertible exemplifies the glamour and style of the Squarebird. Originally delivered in Moroccan Ivory over a black and white interior, it has been beautifully restored to this striking Raven Black over beige leather combination. This car has long been collector-owned and maintained, having been previously in the renowned Milton Robson Collection, later coming into the care of Mike Leiths extensive collection, before joining that of the most recent owner. The restoration was done several years ago, yet it remains in superb condition, having been used sparingly since it was completed.

True to the Squarebirds luxurious image, this car is loaded with options including power steering and brakes, power windows, Magic Aire ventilation with factory air conditioning, pushbutton AM radio, and the standard power operated top (in tan pinpoint vinyl) which disappears beneath a body-colored decklid for a sleek profile. Other notable details include a continental kit, Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels with wide whitewall tires, search lamp, and tinted glass.

Detailing on this car is exceptional with high-quality finishes found inside and out. The beige leather upholstery is crisp and taut, and the dark brown upper dash and door cards provide a nice accent to the lighter seats. Lifting the front-hinged hood reveals the highly detailed 352 cu.in FE-series engine, dressed in a chrome air cleaner and chrome valve covers. The engine bay is exceptionally clean from the firewall down to the exhaust manifolds in their fresh cast-grey finish.

The 1960 Thunderbird is a stylish classic that is easy to enjoy, with room for the family or a couple of friends to go enjoy a glamorous night on the town. With distinctive mid-century styling and robust underpinnings, the Squarebird is increasingly sought after by collectors, and this outstanding example will undoubtedly please its next discerning caretaker.
