Between 1958 and 1960, just 353 examples of the Ferrari 250 GT Coup were built wearing Pinin Farina coachwork. Of those, only 151 were later Series II cars introduced for 1960, they featured improved shock absorbers, greater refinement, and the new outside-plug Tipo 128F motor. But the Colombo V-12 sitting at the heart of chassis number 1743 GT is even more special.
Ordered by inaugural European Hillclimb Championship title winner Willy Peter Daetwyler, this Series II was specially commissioned from the factory with a competition-specification engine. Analogous to the powerplant found in a 250 GT SWB, the 3.0-litre unit featured a trio of Weber 40 DCL6 carburettors further to high-lift camshafts, velocity stacks, and an Abarth exhaust system. In keeping with the motorsport pedigree of Daetwyler, the Ferrari was also equipped with Borrani wire wheels, servo-assisted disc brakes, a limited-slip differential, two map pockets, a passenger-side headrest only, and a central-mounted Marchal spotlight that required the grille to be modified and the Cavallino emblem offset to the left.
Finished in Grigio Argento over Rosso Connolly leather and vinyl, the car was supplied new to Switzerland in April 1960. Later that year, it was taken by Daetwyler to the United States. He used the Ferrari in California to help train aspiring racing drivers, including working to refine the skills of Albert Obrist. The 250 GT Coup remained in The Golden State thereafter through a series of owners, such as noted marque collector Paul Forbes, before being restored between 2011 and 2012. Acquired in 2021 by the vendor, chassis 1743 GT was finally exported to the United Kingdom.
Affectionately and fittingly known as Lupo , this wolf in sheeps clothing significantly presents in its factory colour combination and retains its matching-numbers special engine. Accompanied by a history report compiled by marque authority Marcel Massini and boasting a magnificent origin story, this 250 GT Coup Series II is a prime candidate for entry into a variety of concours events.
