Classic Car Overview
1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta TI (Restored)
This 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta is a desirable Ti model that was stored for some years by the owner of the Alfa dealer in Sala Consilina in Southern Italy finally the vehicle was purchased in 2016 by an Alfa Romeo collector in Florida. The odometer shows a total of 89,800 kilometers (~56k miles) on the odometer and has been repainted in what is believed to be the original color. It has been polished and detailed but is in otherwise as-found condition. The body is in well-preserved shape, and no filler can be detected with a magnet. The car is powered by its factory 1300cc twin-cam inline-four, which is mated to a 4-speed manual transmission shifted on the column. In preparation for sale, the seats were recovered, the braking system gone through, the fuel system overhauled, and the carburetor rebuilt, Services dated (2015/2016) It is said to start quickly and run well. A certification from the Automobile Club D’italia shows the production date and build details in Italian, and the car has a clean Florida title in the selling dealer’s name.
The TI (Turismo Internationale) was the performance model of the 4-door Berlina Giulietta and was produced in more limited numbers. This car wears an older repaint and the features on the second-generation Berlinas were slightly revised, with recessed headlights and new grilles with chrome frames and two horizontal bars. The rear also showed changes, with larger taillights mounted at the end of the rounded rear fins.
The body is described by the seller to be in quite a nice condition and shows an even gloss and no obvious rust or bubbling. The brightwork on the grille and window trim strips is unpitted and the lenses are clear. The 15″ Borrani stamped steel wheels are shod with new Dunlop SP4 tires. Large, finned drums can be seen behind the slots in the wheels.
The interior is simple and attractive, with the strip speedometer flanked by a tachometer and oil pressure/water temp gauges. The blue body color surfaces are present cleanly and the dash appears uncracked. The gauges and electrical components are all said to function.
The T.I. model offered a higher-performance version of Alfa’s 1300cc twin-cam inline-four, which breaths through a larger twin-choke carburetor. The engine made 74 horsepower when new, which it sends to the rear wheels through a 4-speed column-shifted transmission. The engine bay looks tidy, and the paint on the inner fenders is bright and well-detailed. The seller notes that it needed little mechanical work and was treated to a rebuilt starter, cleaned and flushed fuel system with a new fuel filter, and a rebuilt water pump. The number plate under the hood is unstamped, and the seller notes that the original had most likely fallen off and was replaced but never re-stamped. The chassis number and TI designation are confirmed by the original libretto (title) and ACI certificate.
The seller notes no significant rust or corrosion on the underside of the unibody, which appears to be protected with black undercoating. The gas tank has been rebuilt with new gaskets and fuel sending unit. It was resealed and reinstalled, and the remainder of the fuel system was flushed and overhauled at that time. The braking system received a complete overhaul with new drums where needed, brake lines, hoses, wheel cylinders, and rebuilt hubs and wheel bearings. The stainless exhaust is also new.
Only 40k Berlinas were produced over an eleven-year run, and the T.I. spec models are rarer still. It shares many components and driving characteristics with its sportier Giulietta siblings, but in a more practical four-door configuration. This particular car is a well-preserved example that has been appropriately reconditioned and should provide the next owner with many miles of happiness.
