VW Kombi Van Seeing Resurgence in Popularity

The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. From a cargo carrier with no windows behind the driver's seat to a windowed passenger van with three rows of seats, the possibilities seemed endless.

Classic Car Overview

Classic VW Bugs never lose their cool. Ten model years into its run in the United States, VWs Peoples Car really began to gain popularity and sales as Detroit fielded ever larger models until domestic compacts arrived in 1960. This VW is just as cute as a bug with tons of personality and originality and tons of options! This example was built on September 18, 1957, and it left the Wolfsburg, West Germany factory on September 20, 1957. It left the factory with the following options six-volt electrical system, whitewall tires, Brown-Grey leatherette upholstery and US-equipment. Its original destination was San Francisco, California. The previous owner bought the car in January 2021. Subsequent work included, installing a four-inch narrower front beam, 15-inch copper-plated steel wheels, Hella headlights, a banjo-style steering wheel, a body-color, window-mounted Thermador car cooler, fender-mounted swan-neck mirrors, rear window louvers and a Vintage Speed pine-and-metal roof rack. Therere also chrome bumpers with overriders and a flagpole holder. The engine bay is extremely tidy while the front trunk or frunk is in good order and comes with a spare whitewall tire, wheel and factory VW hubcap. The seller reports the car was repainted in Coral Red (code L351) after bodywork was done sometime during the 1980s. The paint and trim are currently in overall very good order but there are some blemishes on the rear apron and spider cracks. Work performed under previous ownership reportedly included brake system service, engine oil change and new spark plugs. This V-dub rolls on mixed radials, size 16550R15 in front and 195/65HR15 in back. Each tire is mounted on copper-plated wheels. The wheels are in excellent shape and the tires are in very good order. Again, this suspension was fitted with a four-inch narrowed front beam, shock absorbers and flipped spindles while the braking system has been reportedly serviced with replacement parts all around. Included with purchase is the original set of steel wheels with cooker radial white walls, VW hub caps and original VW front end. Under the rear hood is a 1.2-liter flat, air-cooled four-cylinder engine. The motor has received a recent oil change and new spark plugs under the previous owner. The car retains its original six-volt electrical system. Backing the motor is a four-speed manual transmission. This Bug has low-back, folding front bucket seats and a rear bench upholstered in gray and brown vinyl (code M135) with matching inner door panels. Equipment includes a metal, body-colored dashboard, brown carpeting, and a basket mounted forward of the shift lever. A replacement banjo-style steering wheel features a St. Christopher horn button and it frames a VDO speedometer that tops out at 80 mph. A small tool roll is included. For 1958, the Beetle received a revised instrument panel and a larger rectangular rear window replaced the previous oval design. Documentation includes a certificate from the Stiftung AutoMuseum showing factory colors, production dates and equipment, assorted invoices and receipts. Competition to this Volkswagen in 1958 included Nashs Metropolitan. If you dig early VW Beetles, this one might be the next one for your collection.
