Debuting in 1955, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud introduced a more modern and imposing silhouette while preserving the craftsmanship and mechanical refinement for which the marque had long been admired. An expansive bonnet, sweeping front wings, upright Pantheon grille, and formal roofline combined to give the Silver Cloud an unmistakable sense of occasion, becoming one of the most recognizable and enduringly elegant post-war Rolls-Royce models. The Silver Cloud continued Rolls-Royces move toward factory-built steel coachwork, produced by Pressed Steel before completion at the firms Crewe works. It represented a major evolution in design and engineering, replacing the long-running Silver Dawn and marking the beginning of a new era for Rolls-Royce.

Chassis LSDD 278 is a remarkably well-documented, left-hand-drive example delivered new through Rolls-Royce of Canada in Montreal, Quebec, to J.A. Boyd, Esq., a director of the dealership at the time. It was originally specified with a Sage and Smoke Green exterior over an interior featuring Red leather, Maroon carpets, and a Fawn headliner. Special features listed on the factory build record include two exterior mirrors, an oil bath cleaner, a winter thermostat and washer, and an adaptor for an engine heater all features that would be particularly well-suited to harsh Canadian winters. Though factory records in the cars impressive history file indicate that the Silver Cloud was completed in 1957, Boyd first took delivery of it in May 1958. By September 1960, it had passed to Dr. Keith Bonner of Toronto and would subsequently pass to William Stewart of Islington, Ontario, in April 1967. An active member of the Rolls-Royce Owners Club, Stewart would cherish the car for more than 40 years, enjoying it on tours and methodically documenting its maintenance and upkeep in two detailed notebooks and through numerous parts and service invoices dating back to the 1960s.

The Silver Cloud joined the collection of Roger Hadfield in 2008, already having been refinished to its present gold livery, a color that lends warmth and distinction to the supremely elegant coachwork. The largely preserved red leather interior displays the honest patina that only time and careful use can impart.
