Classic Car Overview
The year 1958 was a glamorous one for GM. Swoopy styling, lots of chrome and jet-age-inspired accents marked their cars, especially the top-of-the-line models. Pontiac in particular struck a nice balance between flamboyance and restraint.
Here we have Pontiacs flagship model of the time, the Bonneville, that in addition to being a convertible boasts virtually every option that was available. Indeed, this beautiful Bonny is just one of only 11 (eleven) fuel-injected, air-conditioned 1958 Bonneville convertibles every built.
This incredible example was the recipient of an amazing ground-up, no-expense-spared restoration. Indeed, the correct sparkle carpet alone cost around $5,000. This is surely one that must be seen to be believed.
Finished inside and out in an attractive white and red two-tone color scheme (officially Graystone White with Rangoon Red for the arrow-straight body) this Bonneville defines the term eye candy. The side detail depicting a stylized rocket leaving a trail of chrome stars is so perfect for the era, as are the dual taillights and jet plane hood ornament. The chrome and stainless-steel trim is just brilliant as well, while the fancy wheel covers and wide whitewall tires add the perfect punctuation mark.
Inside there are four leather-bound bucket seats and every power and luxury feature you could get, including power windows, antenna and roof as well as spotlight sideview mirrors, automatic headlight dimmer, the rare and removable Sportable AM radio and the very rare A/C. As with the exterior and underside, the interior is simply pristine.
Under the hood is the super-rare fuel-injected version of the 370 cubic-inch V8 that contributed to the potent output of 310 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. Those were huge numbers for 1958. All that power runs to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission.
Underway, the big Pontiac is a smooth operator, with spirited performance and just the lightest touch required to the power steering and brakes to steer it and slow it down. Whether its drawing admirers at a Cars and Coffee or cruising effortlessly on the interstate, this beautiful Bonneville is something to behold.
