Alfa Romeo established the small car, big performance formula that would characterize the marques finest post-war offerings when they introduced the Bertone-styled Giulietta Sprint in 1954. The companys Twin Cam inline four-cylinder engine was downsized to 1,290 cubic centimeters for the 750-series Giulietta, making use of an alloy cylinder block in the process. The Sprint coupe was joined shortly afterward by the Berlina and Spider 750D versions, the latter styled by Pinin Farina and built on a slightly shorter wheelbase.
The Giulietta Spiders combination of a rev-happy engine, fine handling, a responsive chassis, and good brakes made it a drivers car par excellence arguably superior in driving dynamics when compared with its primary competitor, Porsches 356 Cabriolet and Speedster.
With its timeless styling and endlessly enjoyable performance, any Giulietta Spider is a pleasure to behold and to use. The example on offer benefits from an extensive competition history in the SCCA documented by three separate racing logbooks. The current owner acquired the car in 1988 and as recorded on the purchase agreement, the car had been consistently utilized as a race vehicle.
Of particular note, the car benefits from the fitment of a five-speed transmission, an exacting upgrade that required a modification to a crossmember to ensure proper fitment. In a separate letter, it is confirmed that the Alfa Romeo was completely restored in 1990 and was campaigned in a handful of vintage events afterward. It is presently fitted with a type 530 1.3-liter engine (numbered AR00530 43303), such as would have been found in a later GT 1300 Junior.
Still a wonderful contender for vintage racing, its next owners are sure to enjoy the little Giulietta Spider whilst it carves through the turns of any of the worlds great road courses.
