VW Kombi Van Seeing Resurgence in Popularity

The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. From a cargo carrier with no windows behind the driver's seat to a windowed passenger van with three rows of seats, the possibilities seemed endless.

Ford’s first-generation off-roader has gone from cult classic to mainstream collector.

Classic Car Overview

- 1200cc 4 Cylinder - 4 Speed Manual Transmission - Red over Black - Professionally Restored in 2006 - Fully Serviced by Community Automotive of Grand Rapids, MI - 64k Miles Shown Finding a Type 2 Transporter (T2) pickup in this kind of condition seems to be a bit of a rarity nowadays. Of course when they were built, they were just another pickup which was used for work rather than the rare vintage VW we admire today. The T2 Transporters were efficient and practical, produced in both the pickup form and as a van. Many special order (Sonderausf hrungen) options were offered from the factory. Options such as refrigerator components, a specialty pole-carrying trailer, a display and exhibition van, and a double cab pickup. The vehicle you see here is a 1957 Volkswagen Type 2 Transporter finished in Red over a Black trimmed interior, and currently showing 64,617 on the mechanical odometer. Its shape is immediately recognizable when coming at you down the road, and there is certainly no missing the large VW logo on the front of the vehicle. As it gets closer, this T2 surprises some, since it is a truck. A clever design allows the sides of the bed to drop in addition to the rear panel, to make loading possible on three sides of the bed, rather than just at the back like the tailgates seen on trucks today. In addition, there is a full width storage bin beneath the bed that features doors on either side of the vehicle. This particular T2 is painted in bright Red which certainly makes for a vehicle that is hard to miss. The paint is glossy and even throughout, and was clearly professionally applied. The small amount of trim and extra bits on the exterior of the vehicle show very nicely. A bench seat, shifter, handbrake, radio, and speedometer are just about all the interior features. The simple, efficient design continues to the interior...........driving a Type 2 is something to get used to, although it only takes a minute to acclimate yourself to the fact that when in the drivers seat, you are sitting directly above the front wheel, and there is no hood in front of you. The majority of the interior on this Type 2 is very nicely finished and has obviously been well cared for since the restoration. The black door panels show some wear and the roof panel seems to be partially unfinished. Speaking of the roof, as a split window transporter, this vehicle has the roof mounted vents seen on the early T2 Generation vehicles. An exterior color dashboard, a Sapphire I radio, wood shift knob, and accessory basket are other interior highlights. At the rear of the vehicle is a 1200cc flat four engine mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. The engine itself is tidy with Bosch 6 volt ignition components present. Tan painted steel wheels with chrome hubcaps and beauty rings add a little contrast to the red exterior. As a rare vintage Volkswagen, this awesome T2 is truly a collectors item. Clean, restored T2 pickups dont come up often, and the color combination and condition of this T2 makes it one that should be considered by VW collectors.
