The long-awaited Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud and its sibling, the Bentley S1, arrived in 1955. Vastly different from the former Silver Dawn, the new standard saloon with factory coachwork was delightfully proportioned, elegant, and cost far less than a coachbuilt car. Not surprisingly, it sold in far greater numbers than its coachbuilt counterparts.

The early Silver Cloud I would be the last Rolls-Royce model powered by the companys long-developed, ever-reliable inline six-cylinder F-head engine. Early examples had a compression ratio of 6.6:1, but later Silver Cloud I models, and all models built for the North American market, featured an 8:1 ratio. A General Motors Hydra-Matic automatic transmission came standard on the Silver Cloud and was extremely well-built and reliable. Servo-assisted brakes provided impressive stopping power. Many marque experts regard this as the ideal configuration of the early post-war models.

This Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud I Saloon was delivered new through the respected London dealer Jack Barclay Ltd. on 29 August 1957 to Demetri Manuel Mavroleon, Esq., of Maidenhead, Berkshire, according to a copy of its original build record on file. The exterior color combination is noted as Black Pearl over Shell Grey, while the interior was trimmed with Blue hides, a Grey headliner, and Blue carpets. Equipment noted on the factory record included power steering, Dunlop tires, and a Rolls-Royce radio.

The vehicle was subsequently refinished in its current two-tone blue exterior and appears to retain factory finishes on the inviting interior, replete with lovely, figured wood trim. It joined the present collection in 1990, acquired out of Naples, Florida, and subsequently imported into Canada. In 2007, Roger Hadfield drove it in the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts Club Wheels on Road tour celebrating the organizations 50th anniversary.
